About Cindy Schwalb
"Cindy’s path to functional nutrition began with curiosity and a career change. After working in editorial and communications, she became increasingly interested in understanding why people feel the way they do and how nutrition can support better health. That curiosity led her back to school and continues to shape her approach: listen closely, explore the science, and help people turn complex information into practical, meaningful changes.
Cindy earned a Bachelor of Science in Food and Nutrition from North Carolina Central University and a Master of Science in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine from the University of Western States. She is a Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS), a credential requiring advanced education, 1,000 hours of supervised practice, and a comprehensive certification examination. She practices in Virginia and is also licensed in Maryland as a Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (LDN).
Her graduate thesis explored estrogen metabolism and breast cancer risk in postmenopausal women, including the potential role of nutrition. This personally meaningful research deepened her interest in disease prevention, hormonal health, and the ways individual biology can inform nutrition care. Today, she continues to enjoy translating research into guidance that helps clients understand their health and feel more confident in their choices.
Cindy supports clients navigating insulin resistance, weight management, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular risk, and hormonal concerns. Her experience includes private practice, community settings, and in-clinic obesity medicine, where she provided nutrition support for clients using GLP-1 and GIP-based weight-management medications. She helps clients build eating habits that support nourishment, strength, and long-term health.
She has particular interests in gut health, metabolic health, and nutritional genomics—the study of how genes and nutrition interact. Her training in functional nutrition informs her attention to
