He is the past president of the American Academy of Dermatology. For many years, he has overseen an educational program designed to train the next generation of dermatopathologists. He has served as Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and is on the editorial boards of several medical journals, including the American Journal of Dermatopathology. Dr. Cockerell has been an avid collector of wine and involved in wine and food societies for many years, amassing an extensive collection. In 2005, he and his wife Brenda fulfilled a long-held dream by purchasing an estate vineyard in Calistoga, California, where they began producing wine under the label Coquerel Family Wine Estates. He and Brenda have been married for forty years and have two children, Charles and Lillian. Beyond wine and food, they enjoy traveling, golf, and winter sports.
