Connor McCabe, LMFT

Connor McCabe, LMFT

Marriage and Family Therapist
NY
I am a queer man living in New York City. I recently relocated here after many years in Los Angeles. Prior to becoming a therapist, I worked in the entertainment industry and love working with creative folks. I am passionate about what I do and work with a diverse range of people. This includes members of the Queer community, gay men, artists and creatives, entertainment professionals and members of recovery programs such as SLAA and Al-Anon. I studied at Antioch University where I earned an MA in Clinical Psychology with a Specialization in LGBTQ+ Affirmative therapy. Following that, I trained at the Southern California Counseling Center where I saw individuals and couples and was trained in Attachment-Focused EMDR and the Community Resiliency Model.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I hold the belief that we are all inherently resilient and that each person I work with possesses unique strengths. These strengths can sometimes get shielded from view because of how societal expectations, trauma and past experiences box us into how we think we ‘should’ be. We no longer see ourselves as who we actually are, but rather who the world has told us we are. I work collaboratively with my clients, so that together we can build your new story. I use narrative practices and the strength of the therapeutic relationship, to help bring those hidden strengths forward and find new ways of coping. I hold a trauma informed lens, utilizing EMDR to help heal old wounds that can create patterned behavior that is unhelpful.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I work with my clients to identify the change they want to see and paint a picture of what they hope their life would look like if they felt that therapy was working. We then identify the barriers that stand in their way of that imagined life. Together, we uncover what pre-existing strengths, new strategies, and resources can help move through these obstacles. I also explore with them how historical adverse experiences may have created certain adaptive coping mechanisms that feel unhelpful now. We work to heal old attachment wounds in order to help shift these learned behaviors. I try to carry warmth, curiosity, care, patience, humor and understanding to those I am privileged to work with.
