Cornelius Olufarati, NP, APRN

Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
NM
My journey into mental health care began as a kindergarten classroom educator, where I developed a deep understanding of child development, learning, and behavior. This prior experience sparked my passion for helping individuals and families navigate emotional and psychological challenges. I later built a sound foundation in nursing through my work at UTMB/TDCJ before earning my Master of Science in Nursing with a specialization as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) from Walden University. I provide compassionate, evidence-based psychiatric care to children, adolescents, and adults, specializing in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of mental health conditions. My approach combines medication management, supportive psychotherapy, patient education, and collaborative treatment planning tailored to each individual's unique needs. I believe in treating the whole person—not just the symptoms. For patients who value spirituality as part of their healing journey, I respectfully integrate their spiritual beliefs into the treatment process while maintaining evidence-based clinical practice. My goal is to create a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where every patient feels heard, valued, and empowered to achieve lasting mental wellness.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe that the best mental health care begins with trust, compassion, and genuine partnership. During our visits, you can expect to be treated with respect and empathy without judgment. I take the time to listen carefully to your concerns, understand your unique experiences, and work with you to develop a treatment plan that aligns with your goals and values. My approach is holistic and evidence-based, combining comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, medication management when appropriate, supportive psychotherapy, psychoeducation, and practical coping strategies to promote long-term wellness. Rather than simply treating symptoms, I strive to understand the underlying factors that may be affecting your mental health. I also recognize that many people draw strength and meaning from their faith or spirituality. If spirituality is important to you, I am happy to incorporate your beliefs into your treatment in a way that complements evidence-based psychiatric care. If it is not, your care will remain fully centered on your individual needs and preferences. My goal is to create a safe, collaborative environment where you feel heard, supported, and empowered to take an active role in your mental health journey. Together, we will work toward improving your emotional well-being, building resilience, and helping you live a healthier, more fulfilling life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Your first appointment is an opportunity for us to get to know each other and begin building a trusting therapeutic relationship. During this visit, I will conduct a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation by exploring your current concerns, symptoms, medical and psychiatric history, current medications, family history, lifestyle, and the goals you hope to achieve through treatment. This detailed assessment allows me to make an accurate diagnosis and develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your unique needs. If medication is recommended, we will review the available options together, including the expected benefits, potential side effects, and what to anticipate throughout your treatment. I believe in shared decision-making, so your questions, concerns, and preferences are always an important part of the process. Please note that certain psychiatric medications require laboratory testing before they can be safely prescribed, and additional lab work or ongoing monitoring may be necessary during treatment to ensure your safety and optimize your care. Medication is just one component of treatment. I also provide supportive psychotherapy to help you better understand your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors and to develop healthy coping skills. Based on your individual needs, our sessions may incorporate evidence-based approaches, including cognitive-behavioral techniques, motivational interviewing, stress management, and solution-focused strategies, to help you make meaningful and lasting progress. Follow-up appointments are designed to monitor your symptoms, assess your response to treatment, make medication adjustments when appropriate, review any necessary laboratory results, and address new or ongoing concerns. If your faith or spirituality is an important part of your life, I am happy to incorporate those values into your care when you desire, in a manner that complements evidence-based psychiatric treatment.
