Getting to know Courtney Barnes-Harrington

Born and raised in Tampa, Courtney Barnes-Harrington completed her Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from the University of South Florida. She went on to earn her Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies from South University Tampa, where she was elected to serve as Co-Vice President of her class. In her free time, Courtney enjoys attending concerts and music festivals. She can sometimes be seen heading out on a camping trip, volunteering with groups like Equality Florida, or walking in Pride. She loves reading and watching movies, and she considers herself a “nerd” when it comes to Marvel comics, Dune, and Lord of the Rings. She lives in Tampa with her wife and three cats.

What should a new client know about working with you?

PLEASE NOTE: ALL ADHD PATIENTS MUST RESIDE WITHIN 50 MILES OF THE OFFICE ADDRESS AND REQUIRE STATE-MANDATED ANNUAL IN PERSON VISITS AND URINE DRUG SCREENS. One of Courtney’s greatest skills is her ability to connect and communicate with patients from all different cultural backgrounds. She has a deep desire to truly understand others, and she is exceptional at authentically relating to her patients. She also has a nuanced understanding of how culture can impact the way people think about their mental health and make choices in their lives. She wants her patients to know that regardless of who they are, where they come from, or what they are going through, it is okay. She is here to help them feel better! Courtney also values sharing knowledge with her patients. She believes that telling someone the “why” behind a recommendation builds trust and influences whether or not that person chooses to follow her guidance. “Why” is also a question Courtney often asks when she is trying to get to the root of why a patient feels the way they do or why they are using certain coping mechanisms. By gaining a deeper understanding of each person’s unique history and decision-making process, she is able to provide more personalized treatment.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Courtney offers effective and compassionate care, along with a dose of realism and a warm sense of humor. Her patients often express their appreciation for how easy it feels to talk with her about the challenges they are facing in their lives. She wants each and every person to feel safe and comfortable when they come into her office, so she puts attention into creating a welcoming space. She treats her patients as equals, never talks down to them, and always strives to genuinely relate to them, and resolve their concerns. She loves seeing her patients start smiling and laughing more as they improve.
