Getting to know Crystal Marshall

Hello, my name is Crystal Marshall, I am a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. I recently moved to Oregon from Utah with my husband and our very spoiled cat. We are enjoying the scenery and love to go for walks and frequent drives to see the ocean, waterfalls, and all the other beautiful and interesting things to be found in Oregon. I graduated from Frontier Nursing University located in Kentucky and completed my clinical rotations at Valley Behavioral Health in Utah. The experiences I had with community mental health in Utah provided invaluable learning and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with a variety of clients, experiencing a range of mental health issues. I place a high value on holistic and outcome-based client care that considers the whole person and their unique circumstances and needs. I feel like treatments work best when the client is an active participant in their own care, so I work hard to make sure my clients understand what their options are, and the risks and benefits associated with those options. I look forward to meeting and working with you!

What should a new client know about working with you?

One of the most important things to consider when treating mental health issues is the impact that these issues have on a person’s happiness and quality of life. So, for me that quality of life consideration comes first when working with a client to develop a plan of care. When it comes to treatment there are always a lot of options and different ways we can go and I always try to narrow those down by talking with my client about what works for them. I want to understand the impact that mental health issues are having on my client, and what is most important to them as an individual.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

On the first visit we will come up with a diagnosis and then implement a treatment plan based on shared decision making. This means the provider and client work together to make decisions so that the client is always a participant in their own care. We will discuss the risks and benefits of each treatment option which will allow the client to make informed decisions that fit into their lives. As I visit with my client during follow up appointments the treatment plan may change as we discuss what is and what is not working. At times even the diagnosis may be reconsidered as I learn more about my client. I believe in client centered care which means that my process for treating mental health issues will not only be centered around my personal observations but also the feedback I am getting from my clients.
