Getting to know Dr. Dana Serino

I am a clinical psychologist offering individual psychotherapy as well as neuropsychological and psychoeducational evaluations. I earned my PhD in Clinical Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Neuropsychology at the Brooklyn Learning Center. Additionally, I hold a Master's in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University's Teachers College and completed a fellowship in Women's Mental Health through Cognitive Therapy for Women. I specialize in the treatment of emotional disorders and the assessment of AD/HD and learning disabilities. I help patients better manage symptoms by improving emotional awareness and anxious distress with coping skills, and by gaining insight into patterns of over-learned behavior. Often, people need help and validation to navigate challenging life circumstances-such as resolving past trauma, living through a pandemic, or becoming a new mom-with more empowerment, curiosity, and self-compassion.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Dr. Serino offers an individualized approach to therapy, by tailoring interventions to her patients’ needs, utilizing her breadth of clinical experience and knowledge of evidence-based practices. She infuses talk therapy with skills from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (CBT and DBT). Her therapeutic style is described as warm, collaborative and solution-focused. Her goal is for you to learn to become your own therapist using the insight and skills gained in treatment.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Typically, the initial intake session is designed for us to learn whether we are a good fit for one another. I will try to gather as much information as possible about your current and past circumstances, to best inform my clinical judgment and treatment planning. Often, we don't get to everything in the first session, which is fine because I can learn more about you over time. I don't expect you to open up to me fully in the first session! Depending on your clinical concerns and symptoms, you can expect to feel some relief about a few sessions, and usually significantly better after 12-16. At that point, we can discuss going down to biweekly, to determine if that feels safe and comfortable for you.
