Getting to know Dr. Daniel Faver Linhares

Daniel Linhares, MD is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center. He completed a fellowship in Psychosomatic Medicine at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s–West, a residency at New York Medical College–Westchester Medical Center, and received training in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy at the New York Medical College Psychoanalytic Institute. He strongly believes in the importance of incorporating psychotherapy into the treatment mix, whether used alone or in combination with medication, and integrates this approach into his clinical work.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My goal is to help you feel better in a way that aligns with your needs and lifestyle. I take a thoughtful, comprehensive approach to treatment, beginning with an in-depth evaluation to understand your unique experiences and challenges. My focus is on creating a treatment plan you feel comfortable with—one that promotes lasting well-being and helps you feel like yourself again. Clients typically begin treatment with psychotherapy, with or without medication, depending on their individual needs and goals.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Upon booking, I will reach out to set up a 10 to 15-minute, free-of-cost call so we can introduce ourselves, go over what you are looking for, your presenting issues, safety, and mental health history, and answer any questions about my practice. This will help us decide if we should proceed with the first appointment. Should we move forward, our first appointment will be robust and about 60 minutes long to ensure we have adequate time to get to know each other, determine the right treatment plan, answer all of your questions, and make sure you feel heard. The length (30 or 45 minutes) and frequency of follow-up appointments will be determined by your clinical needs. My model of care was developed by medical researchers and clinical experts. I recommend medications and therapies based on current psychiatric research and consensus from top experts in the field.
