Getting to know Dr. Daniel Zimmerman
Acheron Psychiatry is a depth-oriented mental health practice in New York City offering personalized, integrative care for adults navigating complex emotional, psychological, and cognitive challenges.
We specialize in Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP), neurocognitive care, psychotherapy, group therapy, and trauma-informed treatments. Our work supports individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, attentional difficulties, chronic stress, and patterns that feel difficult to shift through traditional approaches alone.
At Acheron, ketamine is used as a facilitator of psychotherapy—not a standalone treatment. Our KAP program is designed for individuals who may feel stuck, have had limited success with prior care, or are seeking a deeper level of insight and emotional access. Treatment is carefully prepared, medically monitored, and paired with psychotherapy to support meaningful and lasting change.
We take a holistic approach that considers emotional life, cognition, relationships, and nervous system health. Our goal is not only symptom relief, but improved functioning, resilience, and long-term well-being.
Acheron Psychiatry was founded by Daniel Zimmerman, MD, a psychiatrist with extensive training and experience in academic medicine. Dr. Zimmerman earned his undergraduate degree from Yale University, his MD from Weill Cornell, and completed psychiatry training at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital.
What should a new client know about working with you?
At Acheron Psychiatry, clients are met with care that is thoughtful, collaborative, and tailored to their individual needs.
Our clinical services include neurocognitive treatment led by Amanda Sacks-Zimmerman, PhD, ABPP-CN, an associate professor of neuropsychology at Weill Cornell Medicine. Neurocognitive care focuses on understanding how stress, mental health conditions, and medical factors affect attention, memory, and overall functioning—and on building practical strategies to improve daily life through Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT).
We also offer advanced trauma treatment options, including EMDR-informed ketamine-assisted psychotherapy for individuals living with PTSD or trauma-related symptoms. This approach is structured, supportive, and designed to increase emotional safety, flexibility, and distress tolerance.
In addition to individual KAP, clients can participate in our integration groups, KAP groups, and experiential programs as structured, short-term offerings that complement the ongoing work they’re already doing in therapy with their current provider.
All ketamine is prescribed, dosed, and medically monitored in-house by our psychiatrist and founder, Dr. Daniel Zimmerman (Yale, Weill Cornell, Harvard/MGH–McLean). This allows therapists like me to provide preparation, therapeutic support during dosing, and depth-oriented integration within a safe and cohesive clinical model.
Clients often describe our work as both grounding and transformative. Whether someone is seeking symptom relief, cognitive support, trauma healing, or deeper personal growth, we aim to meet them with clarity, respect, and clinical expertise.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
Care at Acheron Psychiatry begins with a comprehensive evaluation to understand each client’s emotional, cognitive, and medical history. From there, treatment is collaboratively designed based on individual goals, needs, and readiness.
Depending on the service, sessions may include psychotherapy, neurocognitive skill-building, ketamine-assisted therapy with medical monitoring, or group-based work. We emphasize preparation, education, and integration—helping clients understand their experiences and apply insights meaningfully to daily life.
Our psychiatrists and therapists work within a cohesive team model, prioritizing safety, continuity of care, and thoughtful pacing. Many clients appreciate our balance of clinical rigor and human warmth.
As our practice continues to grow, we remain committed to creating an inclusive, supportive environment where individuals feel seen, respected, and supported throughout their healing process.

I had my first appointment at this clinic yesterday, and I was extremely disappointed. While the clinic itself is big and impressive, the service was completely unprofessional. Sitting in front of a professional who spent the most of the 50-minute session constantly yawning and biting his nails was incredibly unpleasant and borderline offensive. On top of that, he repeatedly brought up ketamine treatments, as if he was selling the product/services, while completely ignoring the reason I came to meet with him in the first place.
I left feeling frustrated and unheard. I will definitely not be returning.

The doctor gave the impression that this was a 1st session. It turns out it was not. His intention was to introduce the practice and refer me to another practitioner. It was a bit disingenuous. Other than this significant lack of communication, I found the doctor to be professional and attentive. As he was unwilling to accept responsibility for his lack of clarity I have chosen to seek treatment elsewhere.

Rather regrettable experience. Unprofessional & terrible listener. Probably too money minded & didn’t come across as genuine at all. Again a terrible terrible listener. He’d rather discuss politics than the the specifics of treatment; so he can push another appointment? Not focused or directed at all.
I was also pissed by the wasteful repetitiveness. I filled my full name, DOB, address etc online when booking the appointment. His office called me a week before appointment to have me repeat it on the phone again. Then I had to fill it in by hand again when I arrived at his office. Then the doctor in his chamber wanted me to repeat the info so he can type it in his notes. Really my full name & address?! And then he didn’t have enough time to discuss the dosage. What disrespect & waste of time.

I would not recommend this practice. I went in for an initial consultation and never once was I asked about any symptoms that were bothersome. The intake interview was not guided at all and I left feeling like I missed covering things that were important to me because of the lack of structure/format. On top of that, Dr. Zimmerman at one point called a 6-month relationship that I mentioned just ended “not a real relationship,” and laughed multiple times during my intake interview. I don’t know if he was trying to empathize or felt uncomfortable but it did not sit well. Finally, despite knowing that I am already in regular therapy with a provider I love, the practice heavily pushed booking a therapy appointment with them in addition to a medication management follow up. I left with a prescription and a bad taste in my mouth, but no knowledge of a formal diagnosis.

Dr. Zimmerman was great. Very easy to speak with, a great listener, and really helpful in helping me think about my long-term mental health treatment plan. Looking forward to starting my work with Acheron.

I would highly recommend this doctor. Daniel Zimmerman stands out by maintaining a highly professional demeanor during meetings. Not only does he dress appropriately, but his office also exudes a comforting atmosphere. He demonstrates genuine concern by asking pertinent questions to gain a comprehensive understanding of the issues I am encountering. In contrast to some doctors I have encountered who ask trivial questions before addressing my actual concerns, Daniel Zimmerman prioritizes my well-being. I can feel that he possesses extensive expertise and experience in his field.

Dr. Zimmerman made me feel at ease with his calm, kind demeanor and great bedside manner. I felt heard, and when he asked for clarification, it didn't feel judgmental. Meeting a psychiatrist for the first time is always nerve wracking, but overall I had a good experience.

Dr Zimmerman seemed genuinely invested in my experience and curious about what I had to say. Much different from the “check box” experiences I’ve had with other doctors. Highly recommend

Dr. Zimmerman is insightful, respectful, and genuinely cares about the wellbeing of his patients. He combines expert knowledge of psychiatric medicine with the rigorous analysis of psychodynamic treatment. He answers emails within hours or even minutes and is always available in emergencies. I am a much healthier and more content person for having been his patient.
