Getting to know Danielle Koreny

As a Doctor of Nursing Practice and board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I bring over 25 years of healthcare experience to my practice. My journey began as a registered nurse, where I spent decades providing bedside care and leading teams through complex medical challenges, including serving on the frontlines during COVID-19. I specialize in comprehensive mental health care, including assessment, diagnosis, and medication management for conditions such as ADHD, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD, and psychosis. My experience spans diverse settings from crisis intervention and inpatient care to outpatient therapy groups and telemedicine services. What sets my practice apart is my integrative approach to mental health. I completed the Integrative Health and Lifestyle program at the University of Arizona, which allows me to explore complementary and alternative healing modalities alongside traditional psychiatric treatment. I believe in partnering with clients to develop personalized treatment plans that address their unique needs and help them reach their full potential. My extensive background includes expertise with treatment-resistant conditions and advanced therapies. Whether you're seeking support for ongoing mental health concerns or facing a crisis, I'm committed to providing compassionate, evidence-based care in a safe and supportive environment.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to psychiatric medication management centers on one core idea: finding what genuinely works for you as an individual. During your first visit, I dedicate meaningful time to understanding your complete picture before making any recommendations. I'll ask thorough questions about your symptoms — when they surface, what improves or worsens them, and how they're affecting your daily life. I'll carefully review your treatment history, including which medications you've tried, the doses and durations involved, and how your body and mind responded. It's worth noting that medications labeled as "failed" were often stopped before reaching an effective dose or given insufficient time to work — that history matters and shapes how we move forward. We'll also discuss your broader medical background, relevant family mental health history, your current life circumstances, and what you're hoping to accomplish through treatment. Nothing is too small to bring up. Education is a cornerstone of how I practice. When we go over medication options, I explain how each one works, why it suits your specific symptoms, what improvements to expect and on what timeline, and which side effects to watch for. Informed consent, to me, means you truly understand and feel confident in every decision we make together — not just that you've signed a form. My prescribing style is systematic and rooted in evidence. I choose medications with demonstrated effectiveness, start at appropriate doses, and monitor your response consistently through follow-up visits, adjusting based on both clinical indicators and your direct feedback. Side effects are taken seriously and addressed promptly. Between appointments, I encourage you to reach out with questions or concerns. Medication management works best with steady communication rather than long silences between visits. I also coordinate with your other providers when it benefits your overall care.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Building trust and rapport is essential to effective psychiatric care, and that's where our work together begins. Your first appointment, typically 60 minutes, gives you the opportunity to share your story. I'll start by asking what brings you in and what you're hoping to achieve. We'll discuss your current symptoms in detail—their nature, onset, duration, intensity, triggers, and impact on your functioning. During this initial evaluation, I conduct a thorough psychiatric assessment, including your mental health history, previous diagnoses and treatments, medication trials, medical conditions, current medications, allergies, family psychiatric history, trauma history, substance use, and current stressors. I also assess your strengths, support system, and coping strategies. My diagnostic approach combines clinical expertise with evidence-based tools. I take time to understand the full picture before making recommendations, ensuring accuracy and appropriateness of treatment. When discussing medication management, I emphasize education and shared decision-making. I'll explain medication options, their mechanisms, expected benefits, potential side effects, realistic timelines, and monitoring requirements. Your preferences, concerns, and past experiences shape our treatment plan. I never pressure you—my job is providing expert recommendations while respecting your autonomy. Follow-up medication management visits are typically 20-30 minutes monthly. We'll review your symptom trajectory, assess effectiveness, screen for side effects, and adjust the plan as needed. I value your feedback and encourage honest communication. Between visits, you can contact my office with concerns. My commitment is to delivering compassionate, evidence-based psychiatric care that supports your journey toward improved mental health and quality of life. You deserve care that truly sees and supports you as a whole person. Together, we'll work toward your wellness.
