Getting to know Dr. Darcy Lockman

I'm a clinical psychologist with two decades of experience treating individuals and couples facing a wide range of life challenges and emotional difficulties. I earned my PhD in Clinical Psychology from Adelphi University and completed my internship at Kings County Hospital Center, followed by a fellowship at the Bleuler Psychotherapy Center. In my office, we pay close attention to both your current life and your history to understand your strengths and vulnerabilities and help you achieve your fullest potential to love, work, and experience joy. Over time, you can expect to gain relief from symptoms like anxiety and depression, more realistic self-esteem, a deeper capacity for intimacy, and a more thorough understanding of and compassion for your own humanity. Our individual work will address everything from vague life dissatisfaction to specific concerns such as emotion regulation, feelings of inadequacy and emptiness, depression, anxiety, self-defeating patterns, perfectionism, and all manner of addictions. In my time treating couples, I have completed additional training in the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy. Our couples work will focus on understanding the couple's negative cycles in order to break them. We will work to establish more gratifying ways of being connected-growing a reliable, satisfying, and enduring bond between partners. My services are covered by any insurance plan that includes out-of-network coverage. I am happy to assist with insurance company reimbursement and provide an invoice formatted to be attached to any claim form your insurance carrier provides.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I'm a psychodynamically-trained clinician, meaning that I conduct talk therapy with great interest in how each client experiences the world around them. We pay close attention to all facets of your subjectivity, with an emphasis on how you experience the important relationships in your life. With this close attention, we will develop a deep understanding of your psychology, with an eye toward expanding your capacity to love, work and experience joy.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Talk therapy is a treatment method that encourages the patient to say whatever comes to mind. This kind of therapy is "patient centered," which means I meet you where you are and focus on your most pressing concerns. That being said, I am an active participant in every treatment, sharing my thoughts in order to move therapy in the direction of our agreed upon goals.

    Verified patient
As a first-time therapy patient, I was a little apprehensive about what to expect on my first visit. Dr. Lockman made me feel comfortable right away. I especially like her direct approach; she's not one to just ask you how you feel and then nod. It's a very collaborative process. I'd highly recommend her to anyone looking for a solid professional to help them through a difficult period or a major life change. Trust me; you'll look forward to your session every week.
I really got a lot out of my sessions with Darcy. She was a good listener and offered many helpful insights. I found her to be supportive as she led me on a clear path to meet my goals. Her office is very comfortable and easy to get to, and she starts and ends sessions on time.
Dr. Lockman is one of the most caring individuals I've ever met. She is very easy to talk to, and really listens. Therapy isn't always easy and it can very difficult to share certain things, I've never felt judged by her; on the contrary she is very compassionate and really wants to help. Every week, I look forward to our session. I definitely recommend her!
