Getting to know Dawn Washington

Hello, I’m Dawn Washington, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with over 13 years of experience in psychiatric nursing. I work with adults and seniors navigating a wide range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, trauma, sleep disorders, personality disorders, and more. My clinical background spans inpatient psychiatry, partial hospitalization programs, and emergency psychiatric services, including time spent supporting individuals in crisis. Through my work with organizations such as Sentara Healthcare and LifeStance Health, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for meeting patients with both clinical expertise and genuine compassion, especially during some of the most difficult moments in their lives. I began my nursing journey at Riverside School of Health Careers and went on to earn my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the College of Notre Dame. I later completed my Master of Science in Nursing at James Madison University and my Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification at Shenandoah University, graduating with honors. My approach to care is rooted in the belief that mental health treatment should be both empowering and deeply human. I take a holistic view of care, recognizing the connection between mind and body, and I prioritize helping patients understand their diagnosis and treatment options so they can feel confident and involved in their care. I am especially passionate about reducing stigma and creating a space where you feel safe, supported, and truly heard. My goal is to help you build resilience, gain clarity, and move toward lasting emotional well-being.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I understand that reaching out for help can feel difficult, and I want you to know that you will be met with compassion, respect, and understanding from the very beginning. I often remind my patients that it is okay not to feel okay. You are not alone in what you are experiencing. When we work together, you can expect a supportive and stigma-free environment where you can speak openly without fear of judgment. I take time to truly listen and understand what you are going through, and I make sure you feel comfortable asking questions and expressing your concerns. I see our work as a partnership. My role is to provide guidance, education, and treatment options, while making sure your voice and preferences remain central to every decision. I want you to feel empowered, informed, and supported as you take steps toward improving your mental health.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We begin with a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation where I take the time to understand your full story. This includes your current symptoms, mental health history, medical background, lifestyle, and personal goals. Building trust and creating a clear understanding of your needs is an important first step. From there, we develop an individualized treatment plan tailored specifically to you. This may include medication management, education about your condition, and practical strategies to support your day-to-day well-being. I also coordinate care with other healthcare providers when needed to ensure you are receiving well-rounded support. Follow-up sessions are focused on ongoing support, progress tracking, and making thoughtful adjustments to your care. I place a strong emphasis on communication, so you always feel informed and involved in your treatment. As your needs evolve, your care will evolve with you. My goal is to not only help you feel better in the moment, but to give you the tools, understanding, and confidence to manage your mental health long term.
