Debra Freeman, M.D. completed her undergraduate studies in premedicine and theology at Davidson College, NC, graduating magna cum laude. She returned to her hometown, Gainesville, FL to complete medical school and residency at the University of Florida. Dr. Freeman was an American Cancer Society Clinical Fellow and a member of AOA and AED premedical societies. She is board certified in radiation oncology. Dr. Freeman served as assistant professor in the UF Dept. of Radiation Oncology from 1991-1995, where she specialized in breast cancer and prostate seed implants. She served as Residency Co-Director, Faculty Advisor for the College of Medicine and Medical Director of Radiation Therapy of Gainesville, Inc. She relocated to Naples, FL in 1995, joining Dr. Leonard Shukovsky (formerly of St. Joe’s Hospital in Tampa) at Naples Community Hospital. She became Medical Director of radiation oncology in 1999, and also served as Chairman of the Cancer Committee, member of the IRB, and Physician Liason to the American College of Surgeons. In 2004, Dr. Freeman and Mary Ellen Masterson-McGary, MA, MS introduced CyberKnife radiosurgery in Naples, only the second such site in Florida. They developed the first community-based prostate radiosurgery program in the U.S., and gained national recognition as “leaders” in the field. In 2008, Dr. Freeman and Ms. Masterson-McGary joined the WellSpring team at CyberKnife Centers of Tampa Bay, and continue to develop and promote this new technology. Dr. Freeman has spoken nationally and internationally on radiation oncology topics, and has published several peer-reviewed journal articles, most recently on prostate radiosurgery.
