Getting to know Dr. Derek Phillips

Hi there! I am a licensed clinical and prescribing psychologist in Illinois, a licensed psychologist in Florida, and double board-certified in psychopharmacological psychology and medical psychology. Before joining Arcus, I spent several years as a clinical neuropsychologist in the Departments of Neurology and Psychiatry at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in central Illinois. Since 2020, I’ve also served as the executive director of the M.S. in Clinical Psychopharmacology (MSCP) program at Fairleigh Dickinson University, where I continue to teach psychopharmacology in the APA-accredited clinical psychology PhD program. Teaching and mentoring the next generation of psychologists is one of the most meaningful parts of my work. My path in psychology started at Olivet Nazarene University, where I completed my B.S. in psychology and social work. I went on to earn my M.A. in counseling psychology (2012) and later my Psy.D. in clinical psychology with a concentration in clinical neuropsychology (2015), both from Adler University in Chicago. Because of my deep interest in the intersection of psychology and medicine, I completed a postdoctoral M.S. in clinical psychopharmacology at Fairleigh Dickinson University in 2020, followed by an 18-month prescribing psychology residency at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. At the heart of all of this—my clinical work, teaching, leadership, and advocacy—is a genuine commitment to helping people live healthier, more empowered lives. I’m honored to be a fellow of both the American Psychological Association and the Illinois Psychological Association, and I remain deeply invested in advancing our profession in ways that support both clinicians and the communities we serve. **Please note that prescribing psychologists in Illinois are, by law, not allowed to prescribe Schedule II psychostimulants (e.g., Adderall, Ritalin, Vyvanse) for ADHD. We do prescribe non-stimulants for ADHD and virtually all other psychiatric medications.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a prescribing psychologist, I primarily provide medication evaluations and management, but with some concurrent, solution-focused therapy and/or motivational interviewing. If you're looking for regular psychotherapy ("talk therapy"), then I can help you find a different provider who would be a good fit. In our first appointment, we'll comprehensively review your history (e.g., social, medical, psychiatric) and decide if medication is appropriate and, if so, which medication(s). Sometimes, "deprescribing" is the best path forward, as too many medications can also be very problematic. My style is very collaborative and holistic. While I may be the expert in mental health, you are the expert on you! **Please note that prescribing psychologists in Illinois are, by law, not allowed to prescribe Schedule II psychostimulants (e.g., Adderall, Ritalin, Vyvanse) for ADHD. We do prescribe non-stimulants for ADHD and virtually all other medications for mental health conditions.**

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical initial session will include a 60-minute, comprehensive psychiatric diagnostic evaluation where I am collecting important information to determine the diagnosis and begin the discussion about the appropriateness of medication to help with your condition. A typical follow-up session is 30 minutes and involves continuing the discussion about starting, changing, or stopping medication, as well as reviewing medication effectiveness and tolerability. I will go over possible side effects in detail and answer any and all questions you have about the medication and/or the overall treatment plan.

Dr. Phillips is friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and nonjudgmental. He is everything I look for in a provider and more! Cannot recommend Dr. Phillips enough!
Dr. Derek Phillips has had a profound impact on our family, and I cannot speak highly enough of the care he provided to my father. Following my dad’s stroke, Dr. Phillips took the time to thoroughly explain not only his neuropsychological challenges, but also how his other comorbidities interact and affect one another. His ability to break down complex information with clarity, patience, and compassion made an overwhelming diagnosis much easier for our family to understand. When my father was diagnosed with vascular dementia, Dr. Phillips approached his care with incredible kindness and respect. He treated my dad as if he were his own family—never rushed, always attentive, and genuinely invested in his well-being. His thoroughness, empathy, and dedication made a tremendous difference during a very difficult time. We are deeply grateful for Dr. Phillips’ expertise and humanity. He is an exceptional physician and an even better person.
