Getting to know Dr. Eduardo Leal

** This provider is not in network with insurance at this time; please book with the expectation to pay out of pocket ** I am a Licensed Clinical Neuropsychologist deeply committed to cultural diversity. I earned my PsyD in Psychology from Albizu University, Miami, and recently completed my postdoctoral fellowship in Neuropsychology in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami, Florida, under the supervision and mentorship of Dr. Rene Hernandez-Cardenache. Being culturally sensitive is crucial to understanding psychopathology and how each individual copes with it. While primarily a clinician in daily practice, my research interests focus on delineating the neuropsychological correlates in a diverse adult and neuropediatric population, including individuals with MCI, cerebrovascular disease, cancer patients, adult and pediatric ADHD, autism, specific learning disorders, elderly individuals, and chronic mental health patients with comorbid substance abuse disorders. I am mindful that consuming and conducting research is essential to maintaining a high standard of clinical practice. My esteem for my profession facilitates my ability to apply constructive feedback from colleagues, professors, and supervisors, and to be mindful of the impact of my clinical interventions with my patients. I perceive psychotherapy as a process of teamwork, sharing power, and ensuring that clients have a sense of hope. There is no single way to live one’s life, and as a clinician, I respect when my patients believe they are sufficiently “on track.” I look forward to continuing to grow as a clinician, researcher, academic, and as a better human being.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Neuropsychological evaluations are requested specifically to help your doctors and other professionals understand how the different areas and systems of the brain are working. Testing is usually recommended when there are symptoms or complaints involving memory or thinking. This may be signaled by a change in concentration, organization, reasoning, memory, language, perception, coordination, or personality. The change may be due to any of a number of medical, neurological, psychological, or genetic causes. Testing will be helpful in understanding your specific situation.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A neuropsychological evaluation usually consists of an interview and testing. During the interview, information that is important for the neuropsychologist to consider will be reviewed. You will be asked about your symptoms, medical history, medications, and other important factors. Testing involves taking paper-and-pencil or computerized tests and answering questions. The time required depends on the problem being assessed. In general, several hours are needed to assess the many skills involved in processing information. Some tests will be easy while others will be more complex. The most important thing is try your best. Bring glasses or hearing aids if you use them. Try to rest and relax before your evaluation. You will probably find testing interesting, and the detailed information that is gathered will contribute to your care.
