Elizabeth Cowell, LMFT

Marriage and Family Therapist
CA
MY STORY When I was a senior in high school, I took a psychology class and was fascinated by it. I told my friends I wanted to be a marriage counselor. It took me a couple of different majors and degrees to get to where I always knew I was supposed to be. MY EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION I have been practicing Marriage & Family Therapy since 2018. I earned my Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from Bethel University, as well as a Master of Divinity. I have worked with at-risk youth, high-conflict divorced families, individuals struggling with grief and trauma, same-sex couples, polyamorous couples, and provided Christian-based therapy when requested. I have also worked with children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families. I have experience with individuals, couples, and families in these settings. I am a Prepare-Enrich Facilitator and have completed Level 1 Clinical Training for Gottman Method Couples Therapy. Through my studies, I have learned that therapy is a collaborative process. To achieve your goals, we must work as a team. Like parent-child or spousal relationships, change requires effort from both parties. MY APPROACH “Cognitive therapy seeks to alleviate psychological tensions by correcting misconceptions. By correcting erroneous beliefs, we can end the overreactions.” – Aaron Beck My approach is influenced by Aaron Beck, founder of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Many struggle with misconceptions about themselves, often shaped by their environment. I use CBT to help change those misconceptions so clients feel better about themselves and have a more positive outlook. I am trained in and use Eye-Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) to treat and relieve PTSD, acute stress, and anxiety symptoms from traumatic and other life experiences.
