Getting to know Elizabeth Hortman

Elizabeth is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with a passion for providing thoughtful, compassionate mental health care across the lifespan. With a diverse nursing background spanning women’s health, pediatrics, community health, mental health, and nursing education, she brings both clinical expertise and a warm, whole-person perspective to psychiatric care. Elizabeth has a particular interest in women’s mental health and is internationally certified in Perinatal Mental Health through Postpartum Support International. She understands that pregnancy, postpartum, parenting, hormonal transitions, relationships, and the demands of everyday life can have a profound impact on emotional well-being. She also works with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, mood concerns, attention and concentration difficulties, sleep problems, and other mental health challenges. Her approach is collaborative and individualized. Elizabeth believes patients deserve to feel heard and to understand the reasoning behind their treatment options. She combines careful psychiatric assessment, medication management when appropriate, education, and shared decision-making to develop treatment plans that fit each patient’s needs and goals. In addition to her clinical work, Elizabeth has extensive experience in nursing education and has served as an Assistant Professor of Nursing. She is a Certified Nurse Educator and is currently pursuing her Doctor of Nursing Practice. Her background as an educator shapes the way she practices: she wants patients to leave appointments with a better understanding of their mental health and an active voice in their care.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I want my patients to feel comfortable being honest about what they are experiencing—even when it feels complicated, overwhelming, or difficult to put into words. Mental health rarely exists in isolation, so I take time to understand not only your symptoms, but also your health history, relationships, responsibilities, life transitions, sleep, stress, and the other factors that may be affecting how you feel. My style is warm, collaborative, and educational. I believe you should understand your diagnosis, your treatment options, and why I am recommending a particular approach. Rather than simply telling you what to do, I want us to make treatment decisions together. I have a special interest in women’s and perinatal mental health, including the emotional changes that can occur during pregnancy, postpartum, and other major life transitions. I also enjoy working with patients experiencing anxiety, depression, mood concerns, attention difficulties, and other common psychiatric concerns. Most importantly, you can expect to be treated as an individual rather than a diagnosis. My goal is to create a space where you feel heard, respected, and actively involved in your care.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first appointment is an opportunity for me to understand the full picture of what has been going on and what you would like to change. We’ll discuss your current symptoms, psychiatric and medical history, previous treatment experiences, medications, sleep, daily functioning, relationships, stressors, and other factors that may be contributing to how you feel. From there, we’ll work together to develop an individualized treatment plan. Depending on your needs, this may include medication, changes to an existing medication regimen, education about your symptoms or diagnosis, lifestyle recommendations, therapy referrals, or coordination with other members of your healthcare team. I also believe follow-up is an important part of good psychiatric care. At subsequent visits, we’ll look at what is improving, what isn’t, any side effects or new concerns, and whether your treatment plan needs to change. Mental health treatment is rarely one-size-fits-all, and sometimes finding the right approach requires thoughtful adjustments over time. My goal is for you to understand your treatment plan and feel comfortable asking questions along the way. We’ll continue to reassess your progress and make decisions together based on your symptoms, goals, preferences, and overall well-being.

More information on payments and coverage

Elizabeth Hortman PMHNP-BC is currently in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Cigna and Tricare. Our team will verify your insurance benefits before your appointment whenever possible and can help you understand your expected copay, deductible, or coinsurance. Any amount due at the time of service is processed using the payment method on file. Because insurance coverage varies by plan, verification of benefits is not a guarantee of payment, and patients are responsible for any balance determined by their insurance company after the claim is processed. For patients who are out-of-network or prefer not to use insurance, self-pay options are also available. Our team is happy to answer questions about costs and coverage before your appointment so you can make an informed decision about your care.
