Emily Cannoot, MA

Marriage and Family Therapist
155 N Michigan Ave, Ste. 201, Chicago, IL
“Emily Cannoot” is a pre-licensed provider working under the supervision of a licensed practitioner. I am becoming a therapist because I believe every person deserves a space where they feel seen, understood, and accepted without judgment. I have always held a strong sense of empathy, and over time, I have come to recognize that being a steady, supportive presence for others is a core part of who I am. Being an "ear to fall on" for the people in my life has shown me the power of simply being present with someone in their most vulnerable moments. These experiences have deeply shaped my desire to bring that natural inclination into the therapy room, where I can support healing and growth in a more intentional and meaningful way. I am especially passionate about transforming the way we talk about sexuality, sexual desire, and sexual wellness. Too often, people carry shame, confusion, or fear in these areas, which can quietly impact their relationships, self-worth, and overall well-being. I want to help create a space where these conversations can happen with honesty, compassion, and openness, so people can feel more connected to themselves and to others.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I work with young adults, adults, individuals, and couples who are seeking a deeper understanding of themselves, their identities, and their relationships. Many of the people I support are navigating questions around self-esteem, sexuality, intimacy, life transitions, and personal growth. I believe conversations around sexuality and sexual wellbeing are often overlooked or avoided. I aspire to support a more empowered and authentic connection to desire, identity, and pleasure. I also work with couples and relational systems looking to strengthen communication, deepen connection, and better understand the patterns shaping their relationships. My hope is to help partners build relationships that feel more secure, connected, and intentional.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Working with me is a collaborative and compassionate experience centered on curiosity, authenticity, and growth. I believe my clients are the experts on their own lives, and my role is to work with them as they explore their experiences, strengths, and goals. I strive to create a warm, nonjudgmental environment where people feel safe discussing difficult topics, asking questions, and showing up as their full selves. My approach is relational, affirming, and grounded in genuine connection. I value open dialogue and encourage clients to explore patterns, beliefs, and experiences that may be impacting their well-being, relationships, or sense of identity. Whether we are working through relationship concerns, building self-esteem, exploring sexuality, or navigating life transitions, I aim to help clients gain insight while developing practical tools for meaningful change. Above all, I want clients to feel seen, respected, and empowered as they move toward a more fulfilling and authentic life.
