Emily Shelton, LMFT

Marriage and Family Therapist
IL
Reaching out for help can be hard. Finding a therapist that’s a good fit can be daunting. I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with 10 years of experience providing therapy to individuals, couples, and families in a wide variety of areas, including bereavement support, grief and loss counseling, crisis intervention services, substance abuse counseling, and managing stress, anxiety, and depression. I help couples and families overcome conflict, build communication, cohesion, and intimacy, set boundaries and create structure. I spent three years assisting individuals in a forensic psychiatric hospital build skills for self-regulation, anger management, healthy relationships, and symptom management. For the last few years, I have been providing brief therapy for patients and their family members on an inpatient behavioral health unit at a hospital. In my personal life, I have been diagnosed with and beaten cancer on three separate occasions. I am no stranger to the struggles life can bring! All of that is to say, I love a challenge and I love helping others overcome their own personal challenges.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I take a collaborative, strengths-based, and pragmatic approach and see therapy as a partnership. You are the expert on you. I bring my expertise on mental health and relationships to help you grow toward your goals in your life and relationships. I believe in doing what works and recognizing that the problem is the problem. In my work with couples and families, I believe the relationship is greater than the sum of its parts, meaning that the focus will be on strengthening and addressing concerns with the relationship rather than the individuals.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I like to start with an opening session where I learn all about you—your story, your needs, and what you hope to get from therapy. I like to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere where you feel safe and supported sharing your vulnerabilities. From there, we’ll create a plan to navigate through your challenges toward achieving our goals. Therapy is a safe space for growth and creating change. Doing this work, and you are worth the effort! As long as you’re willing to do the work, I will work with you.
