Marriage and Family Therapist
CT
I’m Emma Katinia Brumenschenkel, LMFT-A, founder of Lover Therapy LLC, and I specialize in helping individuals and couples feel more connected, understood, and alive in their relationships emotionally, relationally, and sexually. Many of the people I work with are high-functioning on the outside but quietly struggling inside their relationships. They may feel disconnected from their partner, unsure how to talk about sex, navigating open or non-traditional relationship structures, recovering from betrayal, or stuck in repeating conflict cycles that leave them feeling unseen and alone. I work with couples and individuals who want more than “better communication”, they want deeper safety, intimacy, and authenticity. Sex and intimacy are central to much of my work. I believe that pleasure, desire, and erotic expression are not luxuries, they are deeply tied to identity, healing, and connection. I offer a non-judgmental, affirming space for clients to explore issues like mismatched desire, sexual shame, porn use, kink, non-monogamy, gender or sexual identity exploration, and rebuilding intimacy after rupture or trauma. I have advanced training in couples and sex therapy and specialize in working with LGBTQIA+ clients, neurodiverse partnerships, and people navigating relationship transitions such as opening a relationship, redefining boundaries, or deciding what they truly want long-term. If you’re ready to stop surviving your relationship and start feeling connected again, I’d love to meet you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Therapy with me is collaborative, gentle, and honest. I will never shame you or tell you how your relationship “should” look. Instead, I help you uncover what actually matters to you and how to build relationships that feel safe, nourishing, and aligned with who you really are. My approach blends attachment-based couples therapy, emotionally focused therapy (EFT), Internal Family Systems (IFS/parts work), narrative therapy, and sex-positive, trauma-informed care. Rather than labeling anyone as the “problem,” we map the patterns between you, how fear, shame, or protection show up in moments of conflict or disconnection. Together we slow those moments down, understand what’s really happening underneath, and create new ways of relating that feel more secure and supportive.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My work with clients is collaborative, structured, and deeply attuned to emotional and relational safety. In our early sessions, I focus on understanding your story, your relationships, and the patterns that brought you to therapy, often meeting individually as well as together when working with couples. From there, we gently map the cycles of conflict, disconnection, or anxiety that keep showing up, and explore the emotions, needs, and protective strategies underneath them. Sessions often include guided reflection, relationship-focused conversations, and practical tools you can use between sessions to support change. The pace is always tailored to you, whether you need space to slow down, feel, process, or take more active steps toward the kind of connection you’re hoping for.
