Getting to know Dr. Eric Morse

Dr. Eric Morse is an Addiction and Sports Psychiatrist dedicated to helping people recover from addictions and mental illnesses. He leads a busy Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone) maintenance Office-Based Opioid Treatment (OBOT) program for opioid use disorder within his private practice at Carolina Performance, part of the American Institute of Healthcare and Fitness in North Raleigh. While most patients are non-athletes, his treatment includes motivational interviewing, biofeedback, cognitive behavioral therapy, individual therapy, and medication management. You can search Carolina Performance for more information. Dr. Morse earned his Bachelor’s from Northwestern University, his Doctor of Medicine from Northwestern University Medical School, completed Psychiatry residency at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and pursued a Fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry at the University of Maryland. In 2021, Dr. Morse received the Frederick Glaser Award from the North Carolina Society of Addiction Medicine, a lifetime achievement award recognizing excellence in the state. In 2022, he was honored with the Nyswander-Dole “Marie” Award from AATOD for his national contributions to opioid use disorder treatment. As a sports psychiatrist, Dr. Morse works with professional and college athletes and teams. He has served as the Sports Psychiatrist for NC State since 2006, specializing in a wide range of performance difficulties. He is a Past President of the International Society for Sports Psychiatry. Before NC State, Dr. Morse worked with UNC, UMBC, University of Maryland, and the Baltimore Orioles, volunteered with US Olympic Teams, and led substance abuse treatment programs for professional leagues. Dr. Morse frequently travels to work with teams and businesses. Understanding the demands on busy professionals and athletes, he offers virtual consultations, with the initial appointment requiring an in-person visit.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Dr. Morse meets patients where they are. We are all perfectly imperfect. He understands that sustained change happens slowly and he prides himself on his patience. Honesty is the best policy. Dr. Morse applauds honesty, even if it something the patient might think it is something he does not want to hear. He prefers truth. He wants to know what you are really thinking and feeling so he can help you more. Dr. Morse will advise but not push you. He will give you his best recommendations not orders. He will gently ask you to take baby steps not giant leaps of faith. Slow and steady wins the race. Dr. Morse is the most anti-Benzodiazepine doctor you will probably ever meet. Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Klonopin, Valium) are not considered first, second or third-line treatments according to the APA's treatment guidelines for every anxiety disorder known to humankind. They harm more than they help - especially when it comes to trauma. It is hard to feel your feelings. Benzos impair that process. In order to truly work through that process, you cannot thrive whilst on them. Benzos have been linked with getting into more motor vehicle collisions, falls, substance use disorders, and dementia later in life. If you are on them, Dr. Morse will help you gradually come off of Benzos while using approved serotonin medications and acquired skills. Dr. Morse enjoys simplifying medication regimens and diagnoses. He has been known to undiagnose people with Bipolar Disorder when appropriate. Dr. Morse is best trained to help people with addictions. Not just substances, but other behavioral addictions. Who's not addicted to their phones, social media, video games, porn/sex, work emails, texts, online gambling now more than ever? Everything is so accessible in seconds and designed to be addictive. What can be done? How do we achieve a better life balance? How do we allow ourselves to be fully present in the moment so we can be truly content? (Happiness is a myth.)

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I like to start with a free brief call to see if we might be a good fit first. That usually only takes a few minutes . Our first appointment will be scheduled for a full hour and we will develop a plan that we both can agree on. The frequency of our appointments are up to you (within reasons and standard of care issues - especially if I am prescribing buprenorphine or a stimulant). It often depends upon your response and how aggressive you want to be in treating your mental health concern. Sadly, it also often comes down to cost and wat you want to afford. I respect that. I want to be as cost effective as possible.

Dr. Morse is an excellent Psychiatrist. His focus is sports, but he has been my family's psychiatrist for over 10 years. He is very easy to talk to and listens more than he talks. His focus for me has always been to get me the most effective treatment. Period. I have heard the stories about other doctors in this field, and I know I made the best choice with Dr. Morse.
Professional, consistently available when needed and is genuinely concerned for every individual/patient he advises. Highly recommend.

I have been a patient of Dr. Morse for many years - and for me, he was a lifesaver. He is compassionate, considerate and accommodating with the knowledge and ability to customize a medical treatment to specifically fit your situation. He does not judge but makes impartial assessments and is honest and straightforward on what he believes will best fit your needs. He is easy to talk to and can be flexible (trust is very important) and is respectful of your time. I have seen other doctors in the past for my conditions but Dr. Morse was BY FAR the best fit for me and I am very thankful to have found him and to be his patient.
Been seeing Dr Morse for 10+ years and he has always been accommodating for whatever was going on in my life. I have never had to wait past my appointment time as he is punctual and keeps his schedule on point. I’m very comfortable talking with him about my personal issues and struggles because he actually LISTENS before he speaks about whatever it is I am going through. He has made himself available on weekends/nights for me when I have an emergent situation. I’m very thankful for Dr Morse’s support and insight over the years.
