Getting to know Dr. Garland Hummel

I am a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner who provides medication management to clients with a broad array of mental and behavioral health needs. I am a perennial learner and am constantly seeking to hone my craft as a provider and to stay on the cutting edge of treatment. My first bachelors was a degree in clinical psychology from Westminster University. I worked several jobs within that domain prior to becoming a nurse, including working at a crisis line which took care of a variety of contracts; from critical incident debriefing for railroads to suicidal callers and scrambling triage teams to remote hospitals. I also worked as a residential advisor for an eating disorder clinic and spent years as the "closed-ward milieu manager" as a psychiatric technician at the old 5W, which could be considered a "psychiatric intensive care unit" serving everyone from geriatric clients, individuals with severe and persistent mental illness, forensic clients, and those with serious medical comorbidities during the most acute phase of their illness. My bedside nursing experience before becoming an APRN includes over a decade of neuroscience nursing, the vast majority of which was on a neuro-trauma/neurocritical care unit at a Trauma 1 Hospital/Academic Research Center. The majority of my training was split between working in outpatient behavioral health clinics and embedded within Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) teams treating individuals with severe and persistent mental illness, many of whom were unhoused. I have a passion for working with marginalized and disenfranchised folks as well as working with other healthcare workers and first responders. I look forward to taking new patients and am honored to be in a role where I can help people be their best and most content selves.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I enjoy collaborating with patients to create a plan of care that works for them and helps them to achieve their treatment goals. I am direct and informal. I am currently seeing new patients at Mountain Mental Health on Wednesdays (but am looking to branch out soon). This is the coolest private practice clinic on the planet (I'm a bit biased). We have an office dog and amazing staff!

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first patient to establish care will be focused on creating a robust and thorough history of my client, as well as creating a therapeutic alliance and developing a rapport. My goal is to help patients achieve their goals, not to dictate what goals they should have. As a prescriber, I can help work with my patients to decide what (and if) medications would be most beneficial for them. I am candid and enjoy patient education and teaching. I want my clients to be very well informed on what they are taking and the pros and cons of doing so, as well as potential issues that may come up. You cannot have informed consent if you are inadequately informed. I can provide talk therapy. My training is predominantly in motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), problem-focused therapy (PFT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). I am currently engaging in further education to help develop these skills and branch into other talk therapy modalities. These interventions will be brief and directed, as my primary role is to facilitate correct psychopharmacological interventions. Both interventions dovetail synergistically. I am also very open to CAM (complementary and alternative modalities), and am a mindfulness coach and yoga teacher.
