He earned his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Secunderabad. He completed his internship and residency at Harlem Hospital Center, followed by a fellowship at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. With the help of the government and the support of Maimonides Medical Center and other donors, Dr. Stephens has been able to travel to Guyana to assist patients who cannot afford open heart surgery. Alongside a team of RNs, anesthesiologists, and perfusionists from Maimonides, he trains their medical counterparts in Guyana. About every two months, Dr. Stephens and his team travel to Guyana to perform coronary artery bypass surgery and valve replacement surgery.
