Getting to know Dr. Gerry (Gerardo) Fontan
**ATTN Patients - please complete check-in forms prior to appointment**
I'm a licensed psychologist with over 20 years of experience helping adults live with greater clarity, purpose, and ease. I work with people navigating anxiety, depression, addiction, relationship challenges, career stress, life transitions, health concerns, and parenting issues.
My approach is grounded in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) — a research-based model that helps you stop fighting your thoughts and feelings and start moving toward the life you actually want. I also draw on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and positive psychology. My goal isn't just to reduce symptoms — it's to help you thrive.
I trained at Columbia University, the NYS Psychiatric Institute, and Jacobi Medical Center, and hold a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Fordham University.
All sessions are conducted via secure video — available to anyone in New York State. I am in-network with Aetna and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. Self-pay sessions are $250. I offer a free 15-minute consultation to see if we're a good fit.
I'd be glad to connect.
What should a new client know about working with you?
Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and I want the process to feel as comfortable as possible from the beginning. Here's what you can expect working with me:
Our first session is a conversation — I'll ask about what's bringing you in, what you've tried before, and what you're hoping for. There's no pressure to have it all figured out. I do most of the listening.
My style is collaborative, direct, and warm. I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. We'll work together to understand what's getting in your way and build a plan that fits your life and your values.
Sessions are via secure video — you just need a private space and a reliable internet connection. Many clients find the convenience of telehealth makes it easier to stay consistent, which matters a lot in therapy.
Progress looks different for everyone. Some people notice shifts quickly; for others it takes more time. I'll be honest with you about how things are going, and I encourage you to do the same with me.
If you have any questions before booking, I offer a free 15-minute consultation — no commitment required. To book, please visit my website.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
My work with clients typically unfolds in three stages.
Getting to know you. The first one to two sessions are focused on understanding what brought you in, your history, and what you most want to change or achieve. I listen carefully and ask questions — this isn't an intake checklist, it's the beginning of a real working relationship.
Building clarity and momentum. Once we have a clear picture of what's getting in your way, we get to work. Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as our foundation, we'll identify the thoughts, feelings, and patterns that are keeping you stuck, and start developing strategies that are more aligned with your values and goals. Sessions are collaborative — you're an active participant, not a passive recipient.
Consolidating and sustaining change. As things shift, we focus on making those changes stick. We build the skills and self-awareness you need to handle future challenges on your own, so that therapy isn't something you need indefinitely — it's something that genuinely changes how you move through your life.
Most clients meet weekly, especially early on. As progress builds, we often move to biweekly sessions before wrapping up.

It was only our first visit, but Dr. Fontan showed a pleasant temperment, and made me feel comfortable. We were able to have a session and prepare my paperwork, and I left feeling good about the meeting.

Although this was the first visit, it felt very rushed. Even though our time was "up" I had a significant amount of things I was hoping to discuss and was told that I'd have to wait until next time. This wasn't the greatest thing to hear from a therapist, and made me realize that this might not be the type of psychologist who would go above and beyond for his clients.

My first experience with a therapist was with Dr. Fontan - overall a great experience. He made me feel comfortable right away and was a great listener, which I presume to be of utmost importance in a psychologist.

Dr. Fontana made me feel confortable on our first visit. He was understanding and I didn't feel judge. He put allot into perspective for me, and I feel confident in our treatment so far.

Dr. Fontan is a great psychologist and I feel very safe and satisfied under his care. He's the type to let you lead the conversation so if you do better with doctors who prompt you, you can certainly consider that. Regardless, Dr. Fontan provides a comfortable environment and is nothing short of professional.
My only note is that ZocDoc originally brought me to him as a psychiatrist, which he is not. If you are searching for someone to help you with your medicine (as I was), he is not able to help you. However, he is a great resource and I would recommend him to both those experienced and inexperienced in navigating the world of psych professionals.

I had a very nice initial visit with Dr. Fontan. This was my first visit to a clinician as an adult so I was not entirely sure what to expect. Dr. Fontan was very organized in his session and we were able to discuss various topics as well as time for administrative things (payment, scheduling, etc.). I will continue to see him and am excited to do so. I appreciated his ability to open/close the session in a way that felt emotionally appropriate (for me). I was given a little bit of homework (which I appreciated and likely asked for). I appreciated his feedback and look forward more sessions. I would say that the counseling rooms were ok, simple, but the office space could use updating. But, he did mention that he is moving offices soon and perhaps there will be an upgrade there...who knows! Either way, I would recommend Dr. Fontan.

No wait to see the doctor, but not worth the visit regardless. Does not seem particularly interested in your concerns, half listens, picks out a single sentence from the entire session and uses that as a hook to guarantee another visit next week. Save your time. Certainly there are other psychologists.

Great. Easy to talk to and insightful. Talks to you rationally and tells you things you want/need to hear, instead of beating around the bush.

I found Dr. Fontan's manner a bit off-putting, to be honest. He seemed, if not confrontational, somewhat aggressive. I also found, in the sessions we had (three), he never once took a note, and much of the time seemed to be just repeating back to me what I said, without providing any further direction or asking the kind of questions you'd think a therapist would want to ask a new patient. I also found him to be both dismissive and condescending when I asked about his approach and talked about my past experiences with therapy. Perhaps he's good for a certain type, but I was neither confident in his abilities to be a good therapist nor comfortable with his personality.

Very good first visit. Understanding and accommodating. Got very focused on tackling problems in the very first session. Scheduled regular follow-ups.

Dr. Fontan is thoughtful, sensitive and always helps me to understand the root of an issue. He asks great questions and supports me as I think about how different issues connect and then take next steps to build a healthier life for myself. Highly recommend him!
