Nurse Practitioner (Psychiatry)
AK
Life is a journey and it can be filled with bumps and uncertainties along the way. These can complicate how we feel about ourselves and others and maybe even how we respond the world around us. It can be very difficult to separate feelings from thoughts or mental health from physical health. We are whole beings not just the sum of our parts. I practice holistic care. I see the patient as a complete person. As a dual certified Family and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, I provide care that is supportive and integrative of one's physical health and mental health. Every person is a unique being and care should be tailored to the specific needs and desires of the individual. My clinical practice spans more than 20 years with experience in primary care, psychiatric care and as a professor in the family and psychiatric nurse practitioner programs. I believe wellness is on a continuum and can change how it appears over a lifetime. Illness likewise can be a temporary or permanent problem, depending on the nature of the disease and the treatment. Shared-decision making provides patients the opportunity to use their voice in the decision making process. While I do believe in the healing benefits of medication, I also believe there are non medication treatments that are beneficial to health and illness, either alone or together. My job is to help patients sort these out and find the combination of treatments that work best for them. The possibilities are endless with the combination of therapy and medication management. I promote individualized plans that provide patients with the education, support and guidance to make the best decisions about their care. In the end...the choice is all about your body, your mind and and the world you live within.
