Gregory Petronzi, PhD

Psychologist

Professional statement

I believe that no universal way of treating people exists. Rather, one's cultural identity, personality traits, and presenting issues guide the way that I approach therapy with him or her. My therapeutic intent is to treat the person not the problem. Therefore, I adhere to a wellness perspective and a positive psychology framework to emphasize strengths and help clients develop their sense of self in a collaborative and supportive way. I have published research specifically examining the extent to which different theories might work better for different people and I use this research to inform my therapeutic work. I currently teach psychotherapy to graduate students at New York University while I work in private practice in Chelsea. I adhere to a generalist model and work with adults of all ages in both individual and couples therapy. Additionally, I offer a full range of personality and vocational assessments. I have extensive experience working specifically with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, men's issues, substance abuse, and trauma and stress-related disorders. I can submit as an out of network provider to all insurance plans. *Note that certain session times may be scheduled with me or one of my highly trained clinicians.

I came to Dr. Petronzi feeling overwhelmed with work and relationship stress. He helped me see how I contributed to my stress rather than always externalizing my issues. After three months, I felt capable of managing previously anxiety-inducing situations. I renewed my self-confidence and gained valuable perspective.

Unlike other therapists I’ve seen and didn’t work with, I felt connected to Greg from the start. He was genuinely interested in what was going on in my life. He treated me with warmth and empathy. He helped me through avery difficult time in my life. Can’t recommend him enough if you want to work with a therapist that really cares about you.
