Getting to know Harpreet Kaur

Hello, and welcome. My name is Harpreet Kaur, and I am a Nurse Practitioner with 6 years of experience providing compassionate, patient-centered care. I currently work with Rutgers Behavioral Health in both inpatient and outpatient settings, where I care for individuals with a wide range of behavioral and mental health needs. My approach focuses on creating a safe, respectful, and supportive environment where patients feel heard and understood. I believe in working collaboratively with each patient to develop personalized treatment plans that promote emotional wellness, stability, and overall quality of life. I am committed to providing evidence-based care with empathy, clear communication, and a strong focus on building trust with my patients. Whether you are seeking support for ongoing mental health concerns or looking for guidance through a new challenge, I look forward to being part of your care journey.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Patients working with me can expect a compassionate, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where they feel comfortable discussing their concerns openly. I believe in building strong therapeutic relationships based on trust, respect, and collaboration. My goal is to help patients feel heard, understood, and actively involved in their treatment and recovery process. My approach to care is patient-centered and evidence-based, focusing on understanding each individual’s unique experiences, challenges, and goals. I work with patients to develop personalized treatment plans that may include medication management, supportive therapy, coping strategies, lifestyle changes, and ongoing education about mental health and wellness. With my experience in both inpatient and outpatient behavioral health settings at Rutgers Behavioral Health, I understand the importance of providing care that is empathetic, practical, and tailored to each stage of a patient’s journey. I strive to create a safe space where patients can feel supported while working toward improved emotional well-being and long-term stability.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), a typical session includes discussing current symptoms, mood, stressors, sleep, appetite, energy level, daily functioning, and response to medications. Initial evaluations are more comprehensive and involve reviewing psychiatric history, medical history, family history, social background, past treatments, and current concerns to help establish an accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment plan. Follow-up visits focus on monitoring progress, assessing medication effectiveness, identifying side effects, and making treatment adjustments when necessary. Sessions also include supportive counseling, psychoeducation, coping strategies, and therapeutic communication to help patients better understand and manage their symptoms. I incorporate elements of talk therapy during appointments, including supportive therapy, cognitive behavioral techniques, motivational interviewing, and stress-management strategies when appropriate. The overall goal is to provide collaborative, patient-centered care that supports emotional wellness, symptom stabilization, and improved daily functioning.
