Getting to know Dr. Heidi Kling

I am a licensed clinical psychologist with 30 years of experience helping people use psychotherapy to work through difficulties or obstacles they may be facing at different points in their lives. I hold a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Adelphi University and have completed advanced training in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis at New York University. Additionally, I completed a fellowship at The Village Institute for Psychotherapy and an internship at Saint Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center. I am available for psychotherapy sessions by Zoom, FaceTime, or in person to help navigate these challenges, as well as provide support for other problems that may be recurring or emerging now. I use a direct and interactive approach to engage clients and help them clarify problems, gain more insight into what is going on for them externally and internally, apply strategies to minimize negative behavior patterns, and cope more effectively with difficult emotions such as sadness, anger, or pain. Although I am solution-focused and results-oriented, I also encourage self-reflection so that problems are less likely to recur in the future. At times, this may require confronting past experiences that are surfacing in the present in the form of depression, anxiety, anger, problems with intimacy, or unwanted thoughts or behaviors. I provide both individual and couples therapy, and in addition to working closely with clients to manage symptoms of depression and anxiety, I specialize in treating trauma from narcissistic abuse, and problems in partner, peer, and family relationships. Ultimately, the work and experience of psychotherapy can increase motivation and the capacity to change, as well as allow clients to feel freer and more in control of their lives—and be less alone in their efforts to achieve this.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Everyone has different needs, and as such I tune in to try and sense what clients need throughout the session. My goal is to make you feel comfortable enough to raise any issue at all, whether it be about current or past experiences, or how you are experiencing the therapy session. As stated above, I use an interpersonal approach and while I am listening closely I am also open, responsive and present and will be sharing my thoughts, questions, and ideas about what is going on in your life and what I think might be most helpful to you.
