What should a new client know about working with you?

As your psychiatric nurse practitioner, my goal is to create a safe, supportive, and collaborative space where you feel heard and respected. I believe mental health care should be personalized—there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. We’ll work together to explore your symptoms, experiences, and goals so we can find the treatment approach that’s right for you, whether that includes medication, therapy, lifestyle adjustments, or a combination. Open communication is key in our work together. I encourage you to ask questions, share concerns, and be honest about how you're feeling—even if something doesn’t seem to be working. Your feedback helps me tailor care that’s truly supportive and effective for you. My role is not just to prescribe but to partner with you in your wellness. I take a holistic view of mental health, considering emotional, physical, social, and cultural factors. I’m here to support you at your pace, without judgment, and to empower you with the tools and knowledge to better understand and care for your mental health.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

As a psychiatric nurse practitioner (PMHNP), my typical process for working with clients is structured but personalized, ensuring that care is collaborative, evidence-based, and tailored to each individual’s needs. Here’s an overview of how I typically work with clients: 1. Initial Assessment and Intake The first session is a comprehensive evaluation. During this visit, I gather detailed information about your: Psychiatric and medical history Current symptoms and concerns Medications and previous treatment experiences Family, social, and developmental background Lifestyle factors like sleep, diet, and substance use This is also a time for you to ask questions, share your goals for treatment, and begin building a therapeutic rapport. 2. Treatment Planning After the assessment, we collaborate to develop a treatment plan. This may include: Medication management, if appropriate Psychotherapy referrals or brief supportive therapy Lifestyle interventions (sleep hygiene, stress management, etc.) Lab work or coordination with other providers if needed I always aim to explain treatment options clearly, including benefits, risks, and alternatives, so you can make informed decisions. 3. Ongoing Follow-Up and Adjustments Follow-up appointments are usually scheduled every 2–6 weeks at first, depending on symptom severity and medication changes. During these visits, we: Monitor symptoms, side effects, and progress Adjust medications or strategies as needed Support your overall mental wellness Ensure continuity and coordination of care As stability improves, visits may be spaced out further. I maintain an open-door policy for concerns that arise between appointments. This process is grounded in empathy, respect, and a belief that mental health care should be collaborative, holistic, and empowering.
