“She is amazing !! She is so well educated but also open minded. I am able to be transparent with her without feeling like I’m walking on eggshells or feeling like im being judged .which I have never had with a another doc…. ever . Her cost /pricing for self pay patients is extremely affordable .It’s been so refreshing to know I found an NP who CARES about me and finding what works best for MY mental health journey …”

Getting to know Dr. Hilary Puzak

Good day! I am a board-certified doctorate-prepared Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I have over 17 years experience in different mental health capacities and over 7 years in addiction management. Plus I have approximately 10 years of acute nursing experience in behavioral services and the emergency department. Nursing is a second career for me, and I started with my Associate's in nursing then I received my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of North Carolina - Wilmington, and then my Master's and Doctorate from the Medical University of South Carolina. I am passionate about providing quality, compassionate, and comprehensive mental health services to adolescents and adults. My current roles include being a psychiatric provider, educator, mental health advocate, and therapist. My values include a patient-centered approach, combining therapy and education with medication management for effective treatment, and inter-professional collaboration for holistic care. I have also obtained additional training in therapy and attended the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Plus during my doctorate education I was trained in other therapy modalities.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to treatment is holistic. In our initial appointment, I like to get to know what has brought you to seek out mental health care, any mental health history, and your unique history. We then discuss treatment options and make a plan that may include, medications, therapy, or both. I find that I am fair and prudent in my practice, and I like to find a way to educate my patients to what is going on with the brain and body.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our initial session, there will be more information gathering for us to work together. Diagnosis will be made and discussed. We will discuss the treatment plan that will include, talk therapy, medication management, or both. Follow-up treatment appointments will include the above. Medication management can be effectively maintained through virtual visits. I frequently recommend a co-occuring therapy with medication management. If we are in agreement, then we will engage in talk therapy and utilize handouts as needed.
