Getting to know Holly Shannon

As a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner with over 23 years of clinical experience, I am passionate about providing compassionate, evidence-based mental health care. My journey in healthcare began in maternal-newborn nursing, where I developed a deep understanding of the critical importance of mental wellness during life transitions and vulnerable periods. I recently completed my psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner certification from Purdue University, building upon my Master of Science in Nursing from Grand Canyon University. This extensive background in both physical and mental health allows me to take a holistic approach to patient care, understanding how mental health impacts overall well-being. My clinical experience spans diverse healthcare settings, from intensive care environments to outpatient services. I have served as a lactation consultant and department supervisor, roles that required strong communication skills, empathy, and the ability to support patients through challenging times. These experiences have shaped my patient-centered approach to mental health care. I hold active memberships in professional organizations, including the American Nurses Association, and look forward to bringing my comprehensive healthcare background to serve your mental health needs.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My practice combines expert psychiatric medication management with genuine, personalized compassion. As a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I take mental health seriously while staying warm and approachable throughout every stage of your care. I understand that attending a psychiatric appointment—especially for the first time—can feel intimidating or uncertain. I work intentionally to create a comfortable, nonjudgmental environment where you can speak openly and honestly without hesitation. My assessments go well beyond current symptoms, exploring patterns over time, contributing factors, the impact on your daily functioning, and the resilience and strengths you already bring with you. I'm skilled at distinguishing between conditions that may look similar, which helps ensure an accurate diagnosis and an appropriately targeted treatment approach. My approach to medication management is careful and deliberate—thoughtfully weighing medication selection, proper dosing, optimal timing, and possible interactions with other prescriptions or existing health conditions. I monitor your response closely, especially when starting or adjusting treatment, and I address side effects proactively before they become disruptive or concerning. You're always encouraged to ask questions, and your preferences and concerns will directly shape the decisions we make together. I also recognize that medication alone is rarely the complete answer, so I actively support a holistic approach that may include therapy, lifestyle adjustments, and effective stress management techniques. Whether you're navigating depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, ADHD, or another psychiatric condition, my goal is to provide compassionate, individualized care that empowers you to reclaim your well-being and move forward with renewed confidence and hope for a healthier future. Together, we'll build a treatment plan that respect your needs, honors your journey, and supports lasting change.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Every therapeutic relationship starts with building real trust and mutual understanding. Your first appointment is thorough by design—we'll cover what brought you in, your psychiatric and medical history, past treatments and how you responded, your family's mental health background, your current medications, and the life circumstances shaping your wellbeing right now. I want to understand not just your symptoms, but how they're affecting your work, relationships, daily routines, and overall quality of life. My treatment philosophy rests on collaboration, transparency, and informed consent. Once we've completed the assessment, I'll share my diagnostic impressions clearly, in accessible language, and walk through your treatment options in detail—explaining the evidence behind each approach and what we can realistically expect. When I recommend medication, I go into meaningful depth: how it works in your brain and body, realistic timelines for improvement based on your particular symptoms, and the side effects to monitor and report. We'll explore alternatives together and address your concerns fully, because treatment decisions should reflect both clinical knowledge and your own values, preferences, and circumstances. During follow-up visits, we'll review changes in your symptoms, how well you're tolerating your medication both physically and emotionally, and whether your daily functioning is improving in ways that matter to you. Are you sleeping better? Can you concentrate at work? Do your relationships feel more manageable? I also believe strongly in comprehensive, coordinated care, and I work alongside therapists, primary care providers, and other specialists when appropriate so that every aspect of your health is addressed holistically. Mental health doesn't exist in isolation—it's tied to your physical health, relationships, work life, and overall circumstances. Above all, I want you to feel like a genuine partner in your care, and understood at every step.
