After his residency, Dr. Levene completed his fellowship in spine neurosurgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital, affiliated with the University of Miami in 2009. Subsequently, he joined the neurosurgery department at the University of Miami and served on faculty through 2020. As part of his time at the University of Miami, Dr. Levene was appointed head of the spine surgery section at the Veterans Administration Hospital. He was the first faculty member awarded an excellence in teaching award from outside the physical medicine and rehabilitation department in recognition of his mentorship to physical medicine and rehabilitation residents. Dr. Levene’s biomedical engineering background influences his approach to understanding and selecting the correct surgery for the correct patient. Dr. Levene’s other interests include the biomechanics of spine surgery, the return to sexual function after spine surgery and evaluating new minimally invasive therapies for back pain. His surgical focus covers the entire spine as well as endoscopic surgery, such as carpal tunnel release.
