Getting to know Irma De Santiago

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) providing therapy for adults who are struggling with anxiety, perfectionism, burnout, low self-esteem, and difficulty setting healthy boundaries. I specialize in working with high-achieving, first-generation adults who often feel overwhelmed by family expectations, guilt, people-pleasing, and the pressure to always be “the strong one.” My approach is collaborative, supportive, and trauma-informed. I integrate humanistic therapy, EMDR, psychodynamic therapy, self-compassion work, and parts-informed (IFS) interventions to help clients understand patterns at the root, process emotional wounds, and build healthier ways of relating to themselves and others. In therapy, I help clients reduce anxiety, strengthen self-worth, improve emotional regulation, and create boundaries that feel both realistic and sustainable. Many clients come to me feeling stuck in cycles of overthinking, over-functioning, and exhaustion, and work toward a more balanced and grounded way of living.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, especially if you’re used to handling everything on your own. Many of my clients are high-achieving and responsible, but also used to pushing through stress without support. In our work together, you can expect a collaborative and supportive space where we move at a pace that feels safe and manageable for you. I take a trauma-informed approach and focus on understanding the patterns that keep you stuck, rather than just managing symptoms. We’ll work on building insight, strengthening self-worth, improving emotional regulation, and creating boundaries that feel realistic in your daily life—especially in family and relationship dynamics. My goal is to help you feel more grounded, more connected to yourself, and less overwhelmed by pressure and expectations.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My typical process begins with an initial intake session where we explore what’s bringing you to therapy, your current stressors, and your goals. I also gather relevant history to better understand patterns that may be contributing to anxiety, burnout, or relationship and family dynamics. From there, we work collaboratively to identify themes and build a treatment plan that feels clear and manageable. Sessions are a mix of processing current challenges, exploring underlying patterns, and building practical tools for emotional regulation, boundaries, and self-compassion. As therapy progresses, we focus on deeper work—such as addressing long-standing beliefs about self-worth, responsibility, and perfectionism—while also strengthening your ability to respond differently in real-life situations. The pace is guided by your comfort, with an emphasis on creating a safe, consistent, and supportive therapeutic relationship.
