Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
CA
It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’m J. Paul, a board-certified psychiatric NP and founder of North Star Psychiatry, where I provide personalized, concierge-level psychiatric care for adolescents and adults throughout California. I specialize in ADHD, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, trauma, OCD, and other mental health conditions. I have worked in mental health since 2018, with experience across Magnet-recognized inpatient hospitals and outpatient settings. This background has given me a strong foundation in comprehensive psychiatric assessment, evidence-based treatment, medication management, and patient safety. My approach is thorough, collaborative, and compassionate. Concierge-level care means taking the time to listen, understand the full picture, and create an individualized treatment plan that fits your needs, lifestyle, and goals. When appropriate, I also incorporate supportive therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy techniques into appointments. I currently provide care through telehealth and offer evening and weekend appointments to make treatment more accessible for working professionals, students, and busy parents. Work and school accommodations are also available when clinically appropriate.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You can expect a warm, thorough, and collaborative approach to care. I take time to listen carefully, understand the full picture, and ensure you feel heard rather than rushed. Together, we will develop an individualized treatment plan that reflects your symptoms, goals, lifestyle, and preferences. My approach combines evidence-based medication management with supportive therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy techniques when appropriate. I will explain treatment options clearly, answer your questions, and involve you in decisions throughout your care. My goal is to provide personalized, concierge-level support within a respectful and nonjudgmental environment.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Your first visit includes a comprehensive evaluation of your symptoms, history, medications, and treatment goals. Together, we will review your diagnosis and create a personalized plan, which may include medication, supportive therapy, or cognitive behavioral therapy. Follow-up visits focus on your progress, medication response, side effects, and any new concerns.

I am in-network with several major insurance plans. Coverage and benefits vary by plan, so I encourage patients to verify their mental health benefits, copay, deductible, and any authorization requirements prior to their first visit. My office can also help confirm eligibility when needed. Copays, coinsurance, and any self-pay balances are collected at the time of service. If cost is a concern, please let me know. I’m happy to discuss options and ensure you have a clear understanding of fees before beginning care so there are no surprises.
