About Dr. James D. Lin

Dr. James D. Lin is a fellowship trained spine surgeon at Mount Sinai Hospital and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery.
Dr. Lin specializes in both minimally invasive and open surgical techniques to treat spinal disorders of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. His clinical interests include adolescent and adult spinal deformity (scoliosis, kyphosis, flatback syndrome), cervical spine disease (disc herniation, myelopathy, OPLL), lumbar spinal pathologies, and spinal tumors. He has expertise in cervical disc replacement, outpatient surgery, robotic spine surgery, and computer navigation assisted spine surgery.
Dr. Lin attended Stanford University and graduated with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in electrical engineering. He received his medical degree at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and completed orthopedic surgery residency at Columbia University Medical Center. His residency at Columbia included training in pediatric spine deformity surgery at the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, adult spine surgery at The Spine Hospital, and orthopedic trauma at Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Following residency, Dr. Lin remained at Columbia to complete advanced training in complex spine surgery at the Columbia University Adult and Pediatric Comprehensive Spine Fellowship and served as assistant attending physician and clinical instructor.
Dr. Lin’s research interests include spinal instrumentation techniques, spinal deformity outcomes, and minimally invasive surgery. He has authored many peer reviewed papers, abstracts, and textbook chapters. He has presented his research at national and international conferences, and been recognized with the Whitecloud Award nomination at the International Meeting on Advanced Spine Techniques.

Dr. Lin and his team were a delight to work with. After trying a variety of treatments for my severe back pain and sciatica, I was referred to Dr. Lin. Within a week and a half after meeting with him, he was able to get me in for the surgery I needed to correct the issue (a lumbar discectomy and nerve decompression.)
I appreciated his recognition of how this pain had impacted my quality of life, and the sense of urgency he and his team had in getting me into surgery ASAP. The entire process was incredibly easy, and 10 days into recovery, I no longer have the back pain or sciatica pain, and pain from surgery feels almost nonexistent.
Would recommend over and over again! Thank you Dr. Lin and team!

Wonderful doctor!! He is a good listener, empathetic and professional, really knows his field thoroughly, is straightforward if something is outside his expertise, and is clear in communicating test results and the 'whys' for next steps. He is generally very prompt, though there are sometimes long waits if he is called in to emergency surgery (which is reassuring, too, given that he will prioritize urgent patient situations over his own daily routine when necessary). Overall, one of the best of the best—a truly excellent doctor!!
