Getting to know James Dowd

My name is James Dowd, PA-C, and I am a Physician Assistant who has worked exclusively in mental health since graduating from Chatham University. I provide psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and guidance around lifestyle habits that support long-term stability. I offer both in-person and telehealth appointments and have practiced in outpatient settings throughout my career. I also have experience working with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) for treatment-resistant depression. My academic background includes studying Athletic Training at Denison University, which continues to shape how I think about the connection between physical and mental health. I work with individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, ADHD, mood disorders, OCD, trauma, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, sleep concerns, stress, and other behavioral health challenges. I especially enjoy helping adults in their 20s and 30s who are working through anxiety, low mood, and self-esteem concerns, though I truly value working with adults of all ages. Communication is the foundation of my approach. Patients often tell me I’m the “medication guy who actually wants to talk,” and I take that seriously. I focus on building strong relationships rooted in trust and collaboration. I take time to explain how medications work, what to expect, and how they fit into a broader plan. I tend to avoid quick fixes and unnecessary medications, emphasizing thoughtful adjustments and long-term strategies. I believe meaningful progress comes from combining medication, when appropriate, with consistent routines, improved sleep, exercise, nutrition, and healthier thought patterns. My goal is to help patients build sustainable change and feel empowered in their care. Outside of work, I enjoy exercising, hiking, skiing, running, playing sports, listening to live music, and spending time outdoors with my wife and dog.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I ask a lot of questions, and I listen to answers. My goal is to provide a safe space for clients to share their thoughts/feelings and explore those thoughts. I genuinely care what my clients say and enjoy discussing all aspects of life and society. I will also always educate about medications and potential treatment plans. My treatment plans are comprehensive and often focus on positive lifestyle habits such as diet, exercise and accessing community. When medications are prescribed, I make sure my clients are aware of the goals of each medication. I genuinely enjoy describing how medications work and how they may positively impact my client’s mental health.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My typical process consists of focusing on relationship building. I strongly feel that if I develop a strong relationship with my clients that is based on mutual respect, it will allow me to provide the best support and guidance possible. My goal is to get to know someone so I can provide the most comprehensive treatment plan possible.
