Do you feel as though you are stuck in a black hole and are hanging on to the side by your fingernails, desperately trying not to be overcome by those feelings? Do you feel as though you can't relax and simply enjoy the moment? Do you feel as though no one understands you and appreciates you for who you are, rather than what you do? If so, I can help you get to a point where you can say what you think in a respectful manner and feel as though you are understood and accepted by those who matter to you. There is no magic pill that will do this. But it is an entirely do-able task. You can learn how to change your thinking about yourself and others, and communicate more effectively and genuinely with those you care about. Relationships deepen and improve when you practice learned skills and are able to develop a more realistic and positive attitude toward life. I am a second career psychologist who has been a client on a number of occasions. I remind myself regularly that the path to wholeness and health is different for most people, but progress is reasonable to expect. My approach to therapy is characterized by cognitive behavioral, psychodynamic, and assertiveness skills training. By that, I mean that how we think about ourselves and others, affects our behavior, both for better and for worse. I also believe that family of origin issues affect behavior in the present, again for better or worse. Lastly, being able to effectively communicate thoughts and feelings, and doing so in a respectful manner, cannot help but improve harmony and understanding in relationships. I spent 22 years as the psychologist at a behavioral health agency in Alamosa, Colorado. As a generalist, I was responsible for providing individual and group therapy services for a variety of ages and backgrounds. I also provided psychological evaluation services for a diverse population in the San Luis Valley.
