Getting to know Dr. James Macchia

Throughout my decade of experience in psychology, I have treated a wide range of mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma/PTSD, phobias, substance misuse, interpersonal conflict, self-harm, and suicidality. I also developed a specialty during my time with Rutgers Athletics, working with NCAA Division I athletes and coaches across many sports. I work with high performers not only in athletic settings but also in educational and career settings. Whether you are a student, professional, musician, athlete, artist, writer, or in any field demanding high performance, anxiety can be a significant obstacle. You are not alone, and I am here to help. I earned my PhD in Clinical Psychology from the Virginia Consortium, which equipped me with a strong foundation in evidence-based practices and clinical skills. I am committed to serving the LGBTQ+ community and have dedicated much of my career to researching LGBTQ+ students, athletes, and professionals. My research has resulted in several presentations and papers on how minority stress, substance use, and coping influence their mental health. I am dedicated to providing an inclusive, culturally sensitive, and supportive psychotherapy environment for adults of all ages, races, sexualities, genders, and abilities. I approach my work with humility, always seeking to improve my understanding of your world, which may differ greatly from my own. As a clinician, the transformative power of self-awareness inspires me. My approach to therapy is integrative, blending cognitive, behavioral, skill-based, and relational approaches. I may work with you on performance enhancement, exploring your identity, and reflecting on motivations and barriers to growth. I believe in making the unconscious conscious to foster meaningful change, especially within a safe, caring, supportive, and sometimes challenging therapeutic relationship.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a clinician, the transformative power of self-awareness inspires me. My approach to therapy is integrative, blending cognitive, behavioral, skill-based, and relational approaches. I may work with you on performance enhancement, help you explore your identity, and help you reflect on your motivations and barriers to personal growth. I believe in making the unconscious conscious to foster meaningful change, especially when this occurs within a safe, caring, supportive, and, at times, challenging therapeutic relationship.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I work collaboratively with my clients. We come together to identify your treatment goals and discuss the best ways of meeting those goals. I am dedicated to providing an inclusive, culturally sensitive, supportive psychotherapy environment for adults of all ages, races, sexualities, genders, and abilities. I approach my work with humility. I can always improve my understanding of your world, which may differ greatly from my own.

Out-of-pocket fees and assistance
Ongoing session: $200-350 for 50 minutes
  • Sliding scale: Offers lower out-of-pocket fees on an individual basis, typically based on your ability to pay
  • Files your insurance claim: You pay the session fee upfront and the provider files the claim for you, so you can get reimbursed directly without worrying about the paperwork
  • Charges post-reimbursement amount: This provider will only charge you for the amount you pay after you get reimbursed from your insurance plan, so you don’t need to pay the session fee upfront

More information on payments and coverage

Bryant West Psychology works with most insurance plans (whether in-network or out-of-network) to make the financials easy, hassle-free, and paper-work-free for you. We can bill your insurance for you, and you can pay us any deductible and co-pays by credit card or through Zelle, as well as the old-fashioned ways, such as check or cash. In-Network: Our clinicians are providers in the following networks: Aetna and its affiliated insurances (Allied Benefit Systems - Aetna, Christian Brothers Services - Aetna, Health Scope - Aetna, Meritain, Nippon, Trustmark ) and student health insurance at NYU, Columbia, New School, Fordham, FIT, and Pratt. In-network, your insurance company sets our fees, co-pays, and deductibles, making our service more affordable. We will discuss this with you. Out-of-Network: We bill all insurance companies, such as United Health Care, Oxford, Cigna, Blue Cross/Shield, and Beacon (to name a few). Depending on your plan, your insurance may pay up to 80% of our fee (and sometimes more). We will do our best to work with you to make payment arrangements that won't break the bank—that is, your bank.
