Getting to know Jamie Plaxco

As a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner with over 23 years of clinical experience, I am passionate about providing compassionate, evidence-based mental health care. My journey in healthcare began in maternal-newborn nursing, where I developed a deep understanding of the critical importance of mental wellness during life transitions and vulnerable periods. I recently completed my psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner certification from Purdue University, building upon my Master of Science in Nursing from Grand Canyon University. This extensive background in both physical and mental health allows me to take a holistic approach to patient care, understanding how mental health impacts overall well-being. My clinical experience spans diverse healthcare settings, from intensive care environments to outpatient services. I have served as a lactation consultant and department supervisor, roles that required strong communication skills, empathy, and the ability to support patients through challenging times. These experiences have shaped my patient-centered approach to mental health care. I hold active memberships in professional organizations, including the American Nurses Association, and look forward to bringing my comprehensive healthcare background to serve your mental health needs.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Please note that I do not accept EAP programs. As a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I focus exclusively on medication management for people navigating mental health challenges. My practice brings together evidence-based psychiatric knowledge and compassionate care, because skilled treatment and genuine support truly belong together. What sets my approach apart is a real commitment to knowing you as a person, not just a patient with a diagnosis. During our first appointment, we will discuss your mental health concerns in depth, but I am equally interested in what matters most to you, what your daily life looks like, the goals you are working toward, and any reservations you hold about medication. These questions are not incidental; the answers inform everything. My aim is to recommend treatments that fit naturally into your life, rather than asking you to reorganize your life around them. When you leave that first visit, I want you to feel genuinely understood and clear about the direction we are taking together. My prescribing approach is grounded in evidence-based medicine while remaining fully individualized. Everyone responds differently, and my recommendations are shaped by your unique history, biology, and circumstances, not a one-size-fits-all protocol. I bring experience with a wide range of psychiatric medications, from well-established first-line treatments to more complex, carefully managed regimens when the situation calls for it. Transparency and education are woven into everything I do. I explain diagnoses in clear language, walk you through why specific medications are recommended, outline expected benefits and possible side effects, and set honest expectations for improvement. Every question is welcome, and I view our work together as a true partnership built on trust. I schedule regular follow-ups, make thoughtful adjustments along the way, and remain genuinely accessible between appointments whenever concerns arise.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Please note that I do not accept EAP programs. My care is guided by genuine collaboration, thoughtful evaluation, and a treatment plan built around who you truly are as a person. Your first 60-minute consultation is a comprehensive psychiatric assessment that explores the concerns bringing you in, what your symptoms actually feel like and how they disrupt your daily life, treatments you have already tried, your medical and family psychiatric history, current medications, any substance use, and the wider life factors shaping your mental health. As a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner focused on medication management, I make certain you fully understand each option available—what a given medication does within your brain and body, the benefits you can expect and how long they usually take to appear, side effects you might notice along with practical ways to manage them, and any alternative approaches worth weighing. Follow-up medication visits last 20 to 30 minutes, scheduled every three to four weeks at first and shifting to monthly once things have stabilized. We will look at the changes you are noticing in your symptoms, how well your medication is working, whether any side effects have emerged, how manageable the regimen feels day to day, and any evidence-based adjustments that make sense. I rely on validated rating scales to measure your progress objectively over time, so our decisions rest on real, concrete data. Although my primary role is prescribing rather than long-term psychotherapy, supportive conversation, mental health education, and practical wellness strategies are a natural part of every visit—including how sleep, stress, movement, and nutrition each shape your mental health. When formal therapy would clearly help you, I work closely with therapists and counselors to keep your care well-coordinated across everyone involved. Above all, I want you to feel genuinely supported by a team working together on your behalf.
