Getting to know Jamie Plaxco

As a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner with over 23 years of clinical experience, I am passionate about providing compassionate, evidence-based mental health care. My journey in healthcare began in maternal-newborn nursing, where I developed a deep understanding of the critical importance of mental wellness during life transitions and vulnerable periods. I recently completed my psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner certification from Purdue University, building upon my Master of Science in Nursing from Grand Canyon University. This extensive background in both physical and mental health allows me to take a holistic approach to patient care, understanding how mental health impacts overall well-being. My clinical experience spans diverse healthcare settings, from intensive care environments to outpatient services. I have served as a lactation consultant and department supervisor, roles that required strong communication skills, empathy, and the ability to support patients through challenging times. These experiences have shaped my patient-centered approach to mental health care. I hold active memberships in professional organizations, including the American Nurses Association, and look forward to bringing my comprehensive healthcare background to serve your mental health needs.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Please note that I do not accept EAP programs. As a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner specializing in medication management, I believe exceptional psychiatric care happens when providers and patients work together as true partners. I bring clinical knowledge, psychopharmacology expertise, and evidence-based guidance, while you bring your lived experience, personal preferences, and individual goals. Together, we will create a care approach that genuinely reflects who you are and what matters most to you. I understand that psychiatric medications can stir up complex emotions, and many people arrive with questions, concerns, or hesitations of their own. I welcome these conversations fully and never push anyone toward treatment they are not ready to pursue. My evaluation is thorough yet conversational, exploring your current symptoms, full health history, daily routines and habits, and your previous treatment experiences and how they felt for you. Whether your goals include improved focus, stronger relationships, better emotional balance, or simply feeling more like yourself again, those objectives become our shared direction and measure of progress. As we work together over time, I actively encourage open discussion about what is working well and what challenges remain or arise. I take your observations and feedback seriously and stay ready to adjust our approach whenever it is needed. I also stay rigorously current on advances in psychiatric medication research and practice, so I can offer a comprehensive range of well-informed treatment options tailored to your specific needs. My core goal is meaningful symptom relief and improved daily functioning, while protecting your quality of life and keeping your treatment plan as simple and streamlined as possible. Whether you are seeking care for the first time or transitioning from another provider, I will meet you exactly where you are with patience and understanding.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Please note that I do not accept EAP programs. My work starts with establishing a trusting relationship in which you feel genuinely at ease sharing what brought you in. Your very first appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation—a detailed, unhurried conversation about your symptoms, your history, and what you are hoping to achieve. I ask about your daily functioning, your relationships, your sleep, and your overall wellbeing, because this thorough foundation is precisely what makes an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning possible. I offer medication evaluation and management, with meaningful, supportive dialogue woven naturally into each appointment. Together, we will explore your options—medications, lifestyle changes, therapy referrals, or a thoughtful combination of these—so that every decision you reach is fully informed. I take the time to explain how medications work and which side effects to watch for, and I understand that your comfort with a plan matters every bit as much as its clinical rationale. We will not move forward until you feel truly ready. Although I am not a primary therapist, substantive therapeutic conversation is always a natural part of how we work together. Regular follow-up visits keep your treatment on track and responsive to where you are right now. We will monitor your symptoms, assess how well your medications are performing, and make adjustments to maximize benefits and ease any challenges that arise along the way. Medication management appointments generally run 20 to 30 minutes. Throughout our partnership, I stay closely attuned to your experiences and continually refine our approach based on your direct feedback—your observations are clinical data I take seriously. Above all, I treat you with genuine respect and compassion, honoring your perspective and lived experience at every stage. You are never walking this path alone.
