Getting to know Dr. Jamie Teunis

I’m a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with a Doctor of Nursing Practice and a master’s degree in Integrative Health and Healing. My background includes more than a decade of experience across inpatient psychiatry, integrated primary care, outpatient mental health, and interventional psychiatry. I work with adults experiencing depression, anxiety, ADHD, trauma-related symptoms, mood disorders, and other mental health concerns. I also have extensive experience working with people who have not responded fully to traditional treatment and may need a more thoughtful or individualized approach. While my training is broad, the way I practice is pretty simple: I want to understand what is actually going on, what has and has not worked before, and what matters most to you. I tend to be straightforward, collaborative, and down to earth, and I want you to feel comfortable asking questions and being honest about your experience.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I see treatment as a collaborative process. I’ll give you my recommendations and explain the reasoning behind them, but I also want to hear your perspective and make sure the plan feels realistic for your life. I look at more than just symptoms or a diagnosis. We’ll talk about things like sleep, stress, relationships, medical history, medications, daily functioning, and previous treatment experiences. Medication may be part of the plan, but I don’t believe every problem is solved by simply adding or changing a prescription. My goal is for you to feel heard, understand your options, and feel like we are making decisions together.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Your first appointment is primarily about understanding your story. We’ll discuss what brought you in, the symptoms or concerns affecting you most, what you have tried before, your medical and psychiatric history, current medications, and what you hope will be different as a result of treatment. I also want to understand how symptoms are affecting your everyday life—not just whether they meet criteria for a particular diagnosis. By the end of the visit, my goal is for you to have a clearer understanding of what may be contributing to your symptoms and what our next steps could look like. We’ll discuss treatment options together, including the benefits, limitations, and alternatives, and develop an initial plan that feels both clinically appropriate and realistic for you.

As a family seeking help for our son who is severely apprehensive about any mental health appointment, we were treated with so much compassion and understanding. Although my son struggled a bit, they were able to help him and has set a plan to continue the help. I am so very thankful we made the 90 minutes drive to come here.

Jamie was amazing. She listened to me and was empathetic. She also took time to talk to me and to explain things throughly. Also asked for my input and my comfortability with her recommendations. I would recommend her to family, friends, and anyone looking for a provider.
