Getting to know Jane Ottah

Ms. Ottah is a Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who graduated from Adelphi University with a Master's in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing. With over 10 years of experience as a registered nurse, she has primarily worked in the challenging environment of correctional health, providing care to patients with severe mental health problems, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and personality disorders. Her journey reflects her steadfast commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of her future patients. She is well-equipped with the latest knowledge and skills in psychiatric nursing, ready to bring a caring and calm demeanor to provide the utmost care for those in need.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Her goal as a practitioner is to empower individuals facing mental health challenges, letting them know they can overcome the struggles they may be experiencing. She believes in taking a holistic approach to mental health care, building trust, and fostering a therapeutic alliance with her patients. She is excited about the opportunity to harness her diverse nursing background to contribute meaningfully to the field of psychiatric mental health.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We like to get to know you and your belief system around mental health and treatment options. It includes a review of medical and psychiatric history, current and past medication treatment, your current concerns and symptoms, and identifying your support system and current coping mechanisms. We realize not all patients are interested in medication management. Medication can be helpful in treating symptoms of many mental health disorders, but not mandatory. We consider this when recommending treatment and meeting you where you are most comfortable. Treatment may also include recommended supplements, vitamins, and herbal remedies which may complement or be an alternative treatment to traditional pharmaceuticals.

If you are looking for someone to simply listen to you, then she is the provider for you. If you are looking for gentler means of central nervous system support/coping mechanisms she is not! On the first call I told her I did not want to use medications. We had a total of four calls and all she did was listen which is great but not quite what I was looking for in a therapist. But the major red flag for me was she jumped to recommend medication several times without trying any other methods. Which is a major issue in our society.

I really liked NP Jane Ottah, she’s very kind and a good listener. You can tell she cares about her patients and likes to cross her t’s and dot her i’s when it comes to learning enough about the patient to make a decision for their health. I’ll be back.
Great - Jane was thoughtful, a good active listener, but also practical in terms of steps that we can take to help. I've been used to feeling like I had to figure this out myself, so it was a welcome change! I found Jane the right balance of friendly and professional, great visit!
It was great.
It was in depth & it seems Jane Ottah took a good bit of time to truly understand my situation before making any decisions. I'm happy with the visit overall.
