Born in the Philippines and immigrating to the United States, at 13 years old Janice Henson was initially exposed to speech therapy as a hospital volunteer in Texas. She attended high school at the Palm Beach County School of the Arts (aka Dreyfoos SOA) with a major in Vocal Performance and was 1 of a 100 students encompassing the 1997 All State Sight Reading Chorus. She earned a bachelor's in Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Florida by December 2000. Janice started providing speech services as a speech assistant for Dekalb County Schools by January 2001. She was lucky to be assigned to Margaret Harris High School in Dekalb County, a school specifically dedicated to students with severe-profound deficits where she was exposed to programming and using various AAC devices to help students communicate. By January 2004, she had earned a Master's degree from Georgia State University and started working for Palm Beach County School District as a speech-language pathologist and subsequently expanded her training into skilled nursing facilities, rehabilitation centers, then trauma hospitals like St. Mary's in West Palm Beach to Memorial Hospital in Pembroke Pines. Her training included certifications for Vital Stimulation, video stroboscopy, fiber optic swallow evaluation, and MBSImp to assess and improve various head and neck injuries sustained in traumatic events. With the changes in tele-health laws in response to COVID, she transitioned to remote therapy in February 2020 and has been honing her tele/remote speech therapy skills. By integrating technology and music into speech services, clients have improved their ability to generalize skill sets in various environments helping them gain confidence and eventual independence.
