What should a new client know about working with you?

Clients can expect a warm, collaborative, and judgment-free environment when working with me. I take time to listen to your story, understand your unique challenges, and explore what has or hasn’t worked for you in the past. My approach is supportive but also practical. I work with you to create a personalized treatment plan that addresses your needs and goals. Many of the people I see have struggled with depression that hasn’t improved with previous treatments, and I specialize in helping clients find new paths forward. Above all, I want you to feel comfortable, respected, and hopeful as we work together. ***READ THIS BELOW ABOUT PATIENTS WITH ADHD DIAGNOSIS *** I welcome patients with a prior ADHD diagnosis as well as those seeking an evaluation for suspected ADHD. Comprehensive ADHD assessments are available to determine whether diagnostic criteria are met. For patients with a previous ADHD diagnosis, medical records documenting the diagnosis and medication history are required, particularly if stimulant medications (e.g., Adderall, Vyvanse, Ritalin, Concerta) have been prescribed. If you are currently taking a stimulant dose above FDA-recommended labeling, the clinical appropriateness of continuing that dose will be determined during your evaluation. I do prescribe benzodiazepines (e.g., Xanax/alprazolam, Ativan/lorazepam, Klonopin/clonazepam, Valium/diazepam) but NOT FOR LONG-TERM USE. When clinically indicated, these medications may be prescribed only for short-term treatment as part of a comprehensive care plan.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our first session, I’ll take time to get to know you, your history, current symptoms, and what you’ve already tried in the past. From there, we’ll work together to develop a personalized treatment plan that may include medication management and ongoing follow-up appointments to track progress and make adjustments as needed. While I do not provide talk therapy, I believe therapy and medication often work best together. If you’re interested, I can connect you with one of the trusted therapists at Kenyatta Black Counseling (KBC) for additional support.
