What should a new client know about working with you?

Dr. Smith uses a person-centered framework when conceptualizing clients and the issues that they present with. She strongly believes that with the correct support, encouragement, and guidance, clients are able to get in touch with their true selves and begin to resolves issues that are leading to unhappiness and incongruence in their lives. In her work with children, she uses creative strategies (i.e., art and play) to engage clients and to interpret difficulties that children may be experiencing. She employs cognitive behavioral strategies, when appropriate, and social skills training for youngsters who struggle to adapt in their social environments.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Dr. Smith conceptualizes client issues holistically. Rather than focus solely on symptom reduction, she identifies maladaptive symptoms, but also larger interpersonal and social issues that may have developed as a result of the psychiatric condition. She has recently published an article titled, Applying Recovery Principles to the Treatment of Trauma, in the APA journal Professional Psychology: Research and Practice (vol.47, issue 4), where she outlines and discusses the benefits of alternative treatments of trauma.
