Dr. Smith received her Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from Florida International University and worked as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor for six years prior to earning her PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Carlos Albizu University. In her work with children, she uses creative strategies (i.e., art and play) to engage clients and to interpret difficulties that children may be experiencing. She employs cognitive behavioral strategies, when appropriate, and social skills training for youngsters who struggle to adapt in their social environments.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Dr. Smith conceptualizes client issues holistically. Rather than focus solely on symptom reduction, she identifies maladaptive symptoms, but also larger interpersonal and social issues that may have developed as a result of the psychiatric condition. She has recently published an article titled, Applying Recovery Principles to the Treatment of Trauma, in the APA journal Professional Psychology: Research and Practice (vol.47, issue 4), where she outlines and discusses the benefits of alternative treatments of trauma.
