I went to Dr. Raj for a physical exam. The office informed me it would be a Telehealth appointment due to covid. I met with her for what I thought was the Telehealth physical, and she ordered me to do lab work at Quest Diagnostics. I went and did the lab work a few days later. She also told me that I would still have to come in for the in-person portion of the physical. The following week I received a call from the office saying that Dr. Raj would like to speak with me about my lab results. I ask if this is an in-person conversation or Telehealth and the person on the phone told me either one, it didn’t matter. So I chose Telehealth because it should be no more than a 10 min conversation, right? Fast forward to my Telehealth appointment, Dr. Raj says that this was supposed to be the in-person portion of the physical (not what the person on the phone said). She did discuss the lab results with me, but I still had to make a 3rd appointment to come in for the in-person physical exam, and I did that. After I’ve completed all 3 appointments for this physical, I started receiving medical bills. One in particular was from Quest Diagnostics for almost four figures for blood work that my insurance will not cover. I asked the insurance why not, and they said that it’s because the lab work was part of a medical visit and not a physical exam. Apparently they don’t cover lab work outside of physical exams. I explained to them that this lab work was part of my physical exam (because that’s what I made an appointment for), and that it must’ve been coded incorrectly. I’ve reached out to numerous people at Dr. Raj’s office trying to get this fixed and I kept getting passed off from person to person with no real resolution. One staff member told me that I can only have 1 physical a year, which is why all 3 couldn’t be coded as a physical. She also told me that a physical cannot be done via Telehealth (which contradicts their policy of doing them via Telehealth due to covid). Dr. Raj shouldn’t have a policy where you have a multi-part physical exam if they can’t be coded as such. She made it impossible for me to have a physical that was covered by my insurance because it was spread into 3 appointments. So now because of her policy, I have to pay 4 figures for a “physical exam” that should have been covered by my insurance. Dr. Raj and Quest Diagnostics are both in-network (Anthem Blue Cross) but that doesn't matter if she is incorrectly coding visits and scamming patients out of extra money.
