About Dr. Jean Bernier
Jean Ciara Bernier, MD is a member of Summit Health's Family Medicine team. Dr. Bernier provides primary care to patients age 18 and older, focusing on preventive medicine and managing chronic conditions. She has an interest in women’s health and is experienced in performing pap smears and inserting birth control devices including IUDs and implants like Nexplanon®. With a background in urgent care, she also manages fractures, lacerations, skin issues, and other acute concerns.
Dr. Bernier earned her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Medicine and Health Sciences and completed her Family Medicine residency at Virtua Hospital, Voorhees. Before medical school, she pursued post-baccalaureate studies at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia.
She believes education is key to her role as a physician. “My goal is to treat the cause and not just the symptoms; I believe this starts with education,” she says, emphasizing open dialogue and patient engagement as integral to treatment.
A family vacation to Jacmel, Haiti, in 2003 solidified her decision to pursue medicine. “My passion for health and the medical sciences has been long-lasting; however, it did not engender such commitment until I was exposed to the realities of health care in the developing world,” she says, noting she witnessed communities suffering from many preventable diseases.
Her experience in Haiti deepened her passion for education and creating forums for exchanging information on disease prevention and closing health care gaps. She strongly supports regular health screenings and proper nutrition as part of preventive care. “Healthy living is my goal for the patient, and I am here to listen and help,” she says.
In her free time, Dr. Bernier enjoys ballet, making earrings (specializing in beaded creations), learning to knit, and exercising.
