Getting to know Dr. Jean Gearon

I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over 30 years experience as both a clinician and clinical researcher. Before entering private practice, I served as an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and subsequently as a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at The George Washington University. What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to therapy is grounded in the understanding that our past relationships shape how we connect with others today and influence our self-perception, emotional life, and responses to life's difficulties. I work collaboratively with clients in a supportive therapeutic relationship to deepen self-understanding, strengthen relationships, develop effective coping skills, and cultivate healthier responses to challenges—all with the goal of fostering greater well-being and fulfillment. I tailor my approach to each person's unique circumstances, concerns, and aspirations. This means drawing flexibly from multiple therapeutic methods—including insight-oriented exploration, practical problem-solving strategies, and cognitive-behavioral techniques—all within the context of a safe, nurturing relationship that balances support with gentle, appropriate challenge when needed.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Many of my clients are accomplished professionals—leaders in their fields who navigate high-pressure roles and serve as trusted advisors to others. Yet despite their outward success, they carry an internal burden from unresolved past experiences: persistent anxiety, self-criticism, shame, or lingering depression. Often, they've never had access to the specialized support needed to fully process and move beyond what continues to weigh on them.
