Getting to know Dr. Jeffrey Wyss

I was born in Denver, Colorado, and grew up in Boulder. I have always been curious and never bashful about asking lots of questions. This was probably why people began telling me I should be a lawyer when I was about five years old. This advice stuck with me, and I went through my entire childhood thinking I would become a lawyer. However, once I got to law school, I began having doubts about being an attorney. I am not adversarial and care more about the truth than winning an argument. After graduating, I worked for Latham & Watkins as an attorney and confirmed my suspicion about my mismatch with law. I did a lot of research, but the focus was on finding support for a desired outcome, unlike the research I did as an undergraduate, where what we discovered determined the outcome. The focus on obtaining outcomes favored by clients as opposed to the right outcomes sapped my belief in the value of my work. I also found myself alone in my office for hours each day craving human interaction. A friend in medical school encouraged me to consider medicine. My academic strengths have always been fields with clear answers: math, physics, chemistry, engineering. Although I had shadowed physicians extensively before medical school, I had no psychiatry experience. I had assumed I would be ill-suited for psychiatry but found the opposite true. I think people are fascinating and enjoy listening to patients explain what they think and why. Helping patients improve their lives through psychotherapy and/or medications has been, and continues to be, extremely rewarding. I earned my Doctor of Medicine from the University of California, San Diego, where I also completed my internship and residency in psychiatry. I love the ocean and ocean sports, which was the main driver for attending law school in Malibu and medical school in San Diego. However, my wife and I decided to move back to Colorado after the birth of our daughter to be closer to family.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Dr. Wyss does not accept any insurance. Some insurance companies will reimburse you directly for out-of-network provider visits, and Dr. Wyss can give a detailed bill for you to use if your insurance company will reimburse you. Dr. Wyss generally only does video appointments. However, due to federal law, prescribing controlled medications (e.g. medications like benzodiazepines for anxiety or stimulants for ADHD) require an in-person evaluation before a new provider may prescribe them (most psychiatric medications, like antidepressants, do not require this). Dr. Wyss satisfies this requirement by doing a brief house call after the initial video visit where he takes your blood pressure and listen to your heart and lungs with a stethoscope. He charges $100 plus $1 per mile from the intersection of Zuni & Midway in Broomfield for these house calls. This happens after your initial video visit where you and Dr. Wyss decide that one of these controlled medications makes sense for you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?
