Dr. Jena Jamison, MD

Psychiatrist

Professional statement

I am a firm believer that each individual is her own best health care provider. My role as a doctor and healer is to facilitate this for each person as much as possible. I provide modern treatment strategies, while simultaneously fostering the individual's ability to engage in preventive practices and self-care. I have been in professional practice since completing residency in 2013, and continue to add to my practice, through additional trainings in healing, psychotherapy, and integrative medical treatments. I completed undergraduate training at Duke University, medical school at East Tennessee State University, residency at the University of Virginia, and was a chief resident in my last year. I most recently completed training at the Barbara Brennan School of Healing.

She's really good. Patient and clear such that you know her questions are leading to reasonable decisions. I've had a dozen psychiatrists and she's in my top 3 for sure, perhaps top 2.

Though I've met some wonderful therapists, I've never met a psychiatrist I liked and trusted, until Dr. Jamison. I am so grateful. She listens attentively and is self-aware and humble enough to not impose her own agenda onto me as apatient. Rather, she is there to work with me to find the best option. I immediately got the sense that she meditates or practices some kind of other mindfulness practice, because of her body language, her radiating compassion, and her skilled attention during our psych sessions--even the short follow-ups. So, even though she's out-of-network (this is a big downside to working with her, for me), it's worth it to me. If being treated with respect, and being listened to as a human being, and not an object onto which docs project their own egos, I highly recommend Dr. Jamison.

Having to switch doctors is never an easy task, but Dr. Jamison has won me over as a patient in one visit. She is the most sincere, down-to-earth, compassionate doctor I've ever met. Dr. Jamison was easy to talk to, mademe feel valued as a patient and genuinely took the time to find out about me and my situation. She has set a new standard for me for how a doctor-patient relationship should be.

Went to doctor because I wasn't sure my meds were working and was feeling a little off in general. She guided me towards a bipolar II diagnosis, which seems a little strange to me considering this is not something that anypsychatrist has diagnosed me with in the past (although I understand that a BP2 diagnosis is difficult since the symptoms often are masked). I found it a bit irresponsible of her to diagnose me with an entirely new mental illness considering she had only visited with me once. I am NOT questioning the accuracy of her diagnosis in this review, but merely saying that this is a HUGE change in my diagnosis and I would have preferred a more cautioned approach. Given my new diagnosis she put me on a mood stabilizer and let me know that some patients experienced mild side effects. She walked me through the options, and we agreed to start on the one with the least amount of side effects. She gave me instructions for titration. I began my regime, and fell immediately ill. I attempted to contact her office to get some advice (this is such a common thing when you go on these types of medication, that I just wanted to make sure that nothing I was experiencing was out of the ordinary). No call back. No follow up. I find it very irresponsible of a mental health professional to send someone on their way with a mood stabilizer and then offer them no sort of support or follow-up in the next week. Every single psychatric professional I have received treatment from will ALWAYS call to see how the meds are feeling within a week of a new prescription. A lot of these medications have serious side effects, so it is important to have some sort of monitoring from your mental health professional. This particular one had all of the normal ones (stomach ache, headaches) but then some nasty ones too (you might get a rash that will kill you! you might exxperience total short term memory loss! you might stand in a harris teeter for 15 minutes having no idea how you got there or what you are doing!). I fortunately didn't get the rash, but I did get the debilitating memory loss and loss of cognitive function and I was scared. And I didn't feel like this doctor would care that I was scared at all. I would not recommend this doctor to anyone based on the interaction I had with her and her lack of follow-up after putting me on a new med. These are serious drugs that seriously effect the human mind and body, and it is a professional duty to make sure that people are responding correctly to the medications. Especially since discontinuing medications can lead to horrible things happening to a person. I quit the medicine and found a new doctor.

Overall I liked her. She has a nice bedside manner and calming demeanor. I will say I was experiencing some situational anxiety due to a couple of life transitions that I was having trouble coping with, but I've never had Anxietyin the past and it's never impacted my life tremendously. I was a bit put off by the fact that she wanted me to go on an anti-depressant. And I was even more put off that she wanted to put me on a very serious anti-psychotic to help me sleep at night. I understand that this is what psychiatrists do in this day and age, but I probably should have just gone to see a therapist.

I thought the Dr. was fine and am returning to see her. She was professional and listened. Explained processes to me. The only thing (and not a big deal) is the office is within another functioning office, so you're sitting ina waiting area near the door and it's a little awkward but it was explained in paperwork. No receptionist. My need to see a doctor outweighed these issues but just FYI

I have only been to three psychiatrists in my lifetime and Dr. Jamison is by far my favorite for a number of reasons. I met Dr. Jamison on Zocdoc after weeks of trying to get appointments with several "referrals" from myprimary physician. First, the logistics: Appointments are easy with Dr. Jamison through Zocdoc or the doctor's personal assistant. Dr. Jamison's office is easily accessible to the downtown DC corridor (K Street) which makes a workday appointment very convenient. I am able to get to and from my appointment in less than an hour because Dr. Jamison is always on time for my visits. Logistics aside, Dr. Jamison is also very personable, understanding, and knowledgeable. She understands the psychological and physical effects of my condition, adult ADD, and recommended a very effective dose of medication that did not worsen my high blood pressure-- something I wasn't sure I would be able to accomplish. Prescriptions are also easy as Dr. Jamison offers electronic prescription submissions to your regular pharmacy. As a woman in my late 30s, I relate well to Dr. Jamison, my first female psychiatrist, and certainly the only one I have seen who is under the age of 65. I highly recommend that you give her a try.

Dr. Jamison is truly a dedicated, caring physician. I am a second year college student struggling with some emotional issues, and Dr. Jamison is helping me navigate the course of my emotions so that I can return to my normal self. Her bedside manner is terrific, and I feel like she is genuinely interested in what I have to say; she takes copious notes yet rarely breaks eye contact. She evaluated various treatment options with me, and valued my input in the discussion. I am so glad to have found such a competent mental health professional.

Wonderful, young/culturally relevant (meaning she's not 90 years old) Dr. that makes you feel very comfortable. When I see her I feel as if MY issues are important to her and that feeling of trust passes on through what she hasto share with me. She is a friend to the LGBT community and seems to be an all around good person. 5 stars.
